Mod made an Oops

I want to apologize to Meph for a string of errors that led to the permanent delete of his second attempt at an introduction.

The thread was moved to the Intro area. In my infinite wisdom, I inadvertently deleted the thread by deleting my post, which was out of order, and post #1. Turns out, it deletes the whole thing

(Side note -- yup the site is a pretty stable atmosphere, not a lot of thread change-ups required )

LSS, his first post was too long for the site filter, and the second post was deleted accidentally by me after a noble attempt by another mod to move it. To have a third introduction should come from us...

So...

Welcome to EM!

(from what I remember)...

Meph has a Classic 1989 Toyota Celica GT-S. It has the twin-cam, 2.0L engine rated at ~140 after mods.

Checkout his ride here.

The engine turns at 3200 at 100 km/h (60 MPH) or 2500 at 80 km/h.

Questions included the best cruise speed, and how to overall improve FE.

Welcome Meph! (and many apologies for the mixup).

then I responded...

Welcome

3200 @ 60 mph...ouch! But 31-32 is pretty good if you do a lot of highway driving. I assume you have the 2.0L with the variable intake?

I would say to poke around the site, read the stickies and see what looks interesting. If you're mechanically adventurous, looking into the possibility of swapping gears comes to mind. Aero is important at higher speeds too.

As far as accelerating, many will argue slower is better, faster is better -- I would try a few techniques -- but avoid full-throttle: it sends the car into "Open Loop" (I assume your engine is fuel injected).

Engines are most efficient under load, and since you may have the torque-building technology of the variable intake, find someplace comfortable to shoot for -- say 2500 RPM with 75% throttle and shift, repeat -- get up to your target speed and learn some techniques for momentum control.

I have the Integra automatic, which isn't so bad at 60 MPH: 2700 RPM -- but I could sure use a manual trans. Our engines produce about the same amount of power (and is similar in dimension). Mine runs best at around 45 MPH (or 1700 RPM). Winter for me is about where you're at now. Without having specs on your engine, 2500 might be the area to cruise (albeit slow). Manual Tegs generally run in the low 30's with the manual.

If you work at it, I bet you could see some decent gains in mileage.

Best FE to ya...

Meph -

Welcome to EM! I really like your generation of Celica because it reminds me of a successful translation of the "original" 1st/2nd generation of Celica. I'm hoping a future Celica (it's rumored, I hear) uses the same philosophy.

Welcome.

with that low of a final drive the slower the better (down to like 30mph I'd guess)

Try and see if you can swap in a taller 5th out of something else.

Which transmission do you have? May be able to swap gaer from camry, or the likes.

I Owned a 91 GTS for a bit, it was a nice ride, mine was the newer body style, Loaded Power Seats, Automatic climate control, sunroof, 8 (or 10?) speaker sound system, factory spoiler, Nice rims from a later celica, the big brakes etc etc. I miss that car.

You can try headers/ port match, but I'm guessing that they will hurt not help mpg.

Check the stickys for starter mods.

In regards to involved engine mods, gas flowing the head and tuning it for torque at lower rpm will improve FE.
