Hey everyone! The name's Sharlene. I'm from Los Angeles. I own a 1987 Pontiac Fiero, but it's out of commission because I can't afford to fix the problem... that and the fact that I've heard scary stories about it being flammable. I don't know the first thing about modifying cars, but I'm here to learn. So... where do I begin? :D

Welcome to EM. I'd say first start with de-flammifying your Fiero. Have you checked out the 50+ Efficiency mods and the 100+ Hypermiling tips up top? Where are you located in LA?

Welcome to the site.
According to fueleconomy.gov the Fiero should get mid 20s with the 2.5L 4 cylinder, and low 20s with the 2.8L V6. I don't think you should have a world of trouble getting low 30s out of it, especially if its a manual trans. Maybe we can help you diagnose the problem. Let us know what is wrong with it. |

Welcome to EM! I can't vouch for the accuracy, but I *think* 1987 doesn't have the fire problem : WikiAnswers - Which 1987 Pontiac Fiero 4cyl fire problems Quote:

Cool, another GM from this era on board!
|
Oh gosh... I have no clue what's wrong with it. My uncle mentioned something about pistons I guess... but I'm completely clueless when it comes to the underneath of a car hood. The only the I know how to do is change a flat lol
|
Well for a 21 year old car its bound to have some piston slap on start up. Done a tune up recently? If you are feeling adventurous to do it yourself any repairs could be cheaper than you think. Most parts especially GM stuff is pretty cheap
|
I definately want to learn how to do it myself... but, I don't know the first thing about cars except were to put coolant, oil, windshield wiper fluid etc... but for sure I really want to learn

Welcome to the site! I also owned a Fiero, but mine was a 1984 and it did burn.........TWICE!
The first fire was in the front under the hood (not engine compartment) and I got that one out. The fire in the rear engine compartment was fatal to the car and it burned to the ground on the side of the interstate. I loved that car, but never got another one. First off, does the car start? If it does start, listen for "knocking" noises or anything that does not sound right and describe the noises here. If it does not make noise, inform us if it smokes or anything else out of the ordinary. If it does not start, then we will have to find out why. |
Will do... you should probably here from me sometime next week when i'm able to get to the car. I own it... but it's at my grandma's house for storage-like reasons.
