New Garage Feature: Search!!!

Okay, it's simple, but it works and it's great!

Go on over to the garage and check it out: EcoModder Fleet list - EcoModder.com

I put it in the page itself to make it easy to do a quick lookup of vehicles in the garage, as we decide what's useful we'll make an advanced search page.

Here's my favourite search: EcoModder Fleet list - EcoModder.com

Now, the question:

What do you want? What features would you like to be added? Search was long overdue, so we hope you like it. What search parameters should we add for the advanced search?

Help us to help you.

EDIT: I'll make my goals with this public, so people can nag me and make sure I do my job:
- Page titles with search-relevant keywords
- Failure page with helpful hints when no results
- A list of how many results there are
- Wildcard searching
- Search by epa range
- Search by real mpg range
- Fix sort bug
- vb security
- boolean search
- advanced search

Good job, Ben

Here's my favorite :

EcoModder Fleet list - EcoModder.com

In terms of options, how about a search wild card like :

Year: 199*
Make: Honda
Model: *X

This would find all the Honda EX/DX/HX/VX cars from the 1990's.

SVOboy 05-05-2009 11:12 PM

O wow, I wonder how to do that (is still learning, not quite a ninja yet).

UfoTofU 05-05-2009 11:22 PM

I wonder if leaving a field blank would work. You could search 1991 Honda X or X Honday CRX

SVOboy 05-05-2009 11:31 PM

I made wildcard searching possible, it was just a few code changes. Let me know if anything is broken, I didn't check every case, just a few, :)

Anything else?

UfoTofU 05-05-2009 11:35 PM

Wow, it's good

Well, I'm just that many steps closer to completely my life's mission

Tango Charlie 05-05-2009 11:57 PM

WOW! It's Awesome!

Hey, look at that, there's more Vibes than I thought... :p

Good job, SVOboy!

SVOboy 05-06-2009 12:00 AM

More complaints, please :)

Tango Charlie 05-06-2009 12:01 AM

It's about freaking time. Sheesh. ;)

SVOboy 05-06-2009 12:08 AM

That's more like it!

Coyote X 05-06-2009 12:34 AM

How about adding other fields? Like say I want to look for a Metro 4 cyl 5spd. Then do another search comparing them to 3cyl 5spd. It would be nice to have search options for all the fields in the garage :)

SVOboy 05-06-2009 12:39 AM

That will go into the advanced search function, which I suppose I will get to work on tomorrow :)

The comparison stuff is going to be a bit more troublesome.

Coyote X 05-06-2009 12:48 AM

The comparison I figured would be just opening two tabs and doing a search in each one

SVOboy 05-06-2009 12:51 AM

O no, need more graphs than that :D

Tango Charlie 05-06-2009 08:18 AM

Out of curiosity, how many vehicles are represented in the garage?

Matt Herring 05-06-2009 09:03 AM

This new search feature is great...nice work! I used to click model, page all the way down to Prius (after it took time to load). Now it's a snap...quick info. on my model car to compare results, see what others with the same model are modding, etc. That's great!

I'd like to be able to search by an epa range (min and max). That way I could compare my car's mpg vs. others in my epa range to see what others are getting, modding, etc. In case you needed an example, my epa is 46 combined...I'd like to search 40-50 or 47+, just 46, etc.

2566 entries when I checked last night.

This is a good idea, I'll have to incorporate it in the advanced search, which I'll be working on today. Thanks!

PaleMelanesian 05-06-2009 10:30 AM

Click a column heading to sort the list, and it drops the search criteria and returns to the full list.

SVOboy 05-06-2009 10:32 AM

Could you elborate on second part of your comment, I'm not quite sure what you mean, :)

Thanks!

PaleMelanesian 05-06-2009 10:37 AM

I did a search for Honda Civic, naturally. Then I clicked the MPG header to sort. That took me to a page that was sorted by mpg, but had ALL the vehicles, not just honda civics.

I was here: http://ecomodder.com/forum/emgarage....el=civic&year=
I sorted, and it took me here: http://ecomodder.com/forum/emgarage.php?sortby=mpg
It should have taken me here: http://ecomodder.com/forum/emgarage....ar=&sortby=mpg

SVOboy 05-06-2009 10:41 AM

O no, a bug. Don't know the solution off hand, will work on that :)

Wonderboy 05-06-2009 02:33 PM

Yeah what's the holdup here? I can't wait to see pale at the top of the 6th gen civic list :P

go faster.

Daox 05-06-2009 02:39 PM

Also, I tried to search just for HX. I used wildcards, but couldn't seem to get it to work?

PaleMelanesian 05-06-2009 02:41 PM

My goal is to be at the top of ALL the civics, but there's one major, streamlined, speedbump in my way. ;)

SVOboy 05-06-2009 02:44 PM

Trim level searching will be in the advanced search thing.

If the "NOT" operator worked, you could search for "Honda Civic NOT Aerocivic". That would take care of the speedbump.

SVOboy 05-07-2009 12:01 AM

Been working on the advanced search for several hours. Hitting a roadblock here or there. Hopefully will have something function up by tonight. Don't expect it to be pretty though.

UfoTofU 05-07-2009 12:31 AM

It's pretty

SVOboy 05-07-2009 01:36 AM

Got something (hopefully) functional up. As usual, complain until it gets better

Tango Charlie 05-07-2009 07:09 AM

How do I search for two different makes/models of cars, like Vibes and Matrix's (Matrii? Matrixies?) ? Separating with a comma doesn't seem to work.

SVOboy 05-07-2009 10:27 AM

There's a good question. I will try to incorporate the standard boolean search operators today when I get home from a Smart car event in NYC

SVOboy 05-07-2009 09:39 PM

Added more stuff to the advanced search feature. Lots of parameters for your joy.

LUVMY02CREW 07-11-2009 06:14 PM

I really do like all the search features you've added.
Thanks again for taking time to make this a great forum!!!:):):)

I have noticed with my particular vehicle's case though, that I hit a snag....
Chevy/Chevrolet and s10/s 10/s-10 are all same truck model, yet come up with different results with each search depending on which version or combination you use...

It seems like when adding a vehicle, if a drop down menu like you see on auto sales/parts websites was available, it would make things a little more uniform. I also wonder if it would be possible to correct/modify the current garage entries????? ...maybe make it mandatory when you go to enter your next fuel log, that you have to update those new parameters??????

Just thinking out loud for ya hear....thanks again!

I think you can correct and modify entries.

Ben was importing EPA for GreenCarAlbum so it'd automatically fill in mileage. This is similar to the menu. I think it's a good idea, although for now members can use standard names, such as, "S-10"

Yes, I know we can correct/modify our own fuel log entries and garage info. What I meant by "current garage entries" was the make and model info for all vehicles... sorry bout that(head and fingers not cooperating).:o

The 3 versions I listed will yield different results when you search. At least with my truck, people list it all sorts of ways:rolleyes:

I was thinking that if a make and model drop menu was available, then it would be standardized. And, expanding on what I said earlier, maybe make it mandatory to update the make and model parameters with a standardized drop menu with your next fuel log, then you would only be prompted to update info every 1-2 years(kinda like they do at our local library to make sure your info is up to date)....

I haven't really searched other makes and models so I'm not sure if it is even an issue for other folks.

It's okay. My head and fingers aren't cooperating either. I think the menu is a good idea. I was saying the people with S-10s could use "S-10" only so you wouldn't have a problem in the search
