A new google add to block

the popup came from your page's google adds, it stopped the page from loading until i canceled it:

Not from google, they don't do stuff like that...in fact, I don't know what that is, but it sounds like spyware and not anything we've put on here.

WaxyChicken -

Were you interacting with other websites during your Internet session? It could be a delayed pop-up from another website.

I'm sorry to disagree, however i am certain it came from ecomodder.
the only other sites i had open at the time were Hotmail and Craig's List.

the status bar on ecomodder said "waiting for xpscanneronline.com....."
Ecomodder 1/2 loaded and did not complete loading until i canceled the popup.
it was a script msgbox type popup and not a new window browser popup.

I'll double check my history to be sure, though. i hate making false alarms.
:)

Hmm, that seems terribly suspicious to me...It's not something I knowingly put on here, for sure...

There is a particular type of software that spams address ranges with messages. Sometimes they get through. (I have a friend that does it.) Also adware can do that.

wikityler 06-12-2008 03:44 AM

sounds like adware to me. have you done a check for malware recently?

What? You don't like "male enhancement" adds? :o

Anyhow, he's a member of this forum, so you just told him. LOL.

That is why I use Firefox as my internet browser and the add-on called "Adblock Plus" makes surfing the net much nicer.

XP Antivirus is a lie!

I had this pop up on my computer once. I don't know how it got there, but there it was. XP Antivirus, it turns out, will first sneak in through a crack in your armor and deposit a few threatening-looking files on your system registry. But they aren't files, they're really just filenames; they aren't threats. And since they have no functional code in them, your regular scanware can't find them.

Only XP Antivirus can. All it does is go in and ream out those files and that's it.

I got rid of mine with a system recovery, but it could require a full destructive restore to clear yours, YMMV. There are also suggestions on the web how to get rid of it without taking these more drastic steps; I just did it my way because I can set it and forget it. Whatever you do, don't buy the XP Antivirus line! DO NOT be taken in by the hype. It's crap.

The only reason you're seeing the message is because your computer has been infected with the XP Antivirus ad. Ream it out and update your security. I haven't seen it come back in the three months since I got rid of mine.

spyware

That is definitely spyware.

It doesn't matter what website you were on when it popped up. It is living somewhere on your harddrive and will pop up again until you get rid of it using adaware or spyware doctor or something like that.

run this:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

and/or:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

and I recommend Firefox with Adblock Plus:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

all of the above are FREE and legal, enjoy
