Inclines and engine braking

I usually ride my motorcycle so I haven't noticed too much until last week. But if you don't shift into neutral either coming to a stop or going down an incline (even fairly low grade) you're engine braking. I started shifting into neutral and found that 95% of the time going down an incline I was either staying at the same speed (low grade inclines) or I was actually speeding up, while in neutral. Suggest to anyone new that you start doing this, even coming up to stops you can coast quite far in neutral.

Our Jeep will actually shift to a lower gear to INCREASE the engine breaking while the cruise is engaged and going downhill. It only does this at around 10-15mph over what the cruise is set at, so very rarely.

In engine brake my cars are stopping injectors so I'm traveling for freeee (and these additional e are free toooo;-) : 0l/100km = infinite mpg :-)

While coasting engine idling my cars are consuming gasoline : 1l/h (0.26g/h).

Usually I'm using DFCO (Decelerating Fuel Cut Off) aka Engine Brake. I'm using Coasting Engine Idling if I know I need more speed at the bottom of the current hill to go up the next hill.
I never use EOC (Engine Off Coasting) as I feel this is too dangerous for me.

Tips #43 is talking about the different ways to "brake". For each one there is at least one situation where it's best.
Anybody have to thing about his feeling for each technique 1st and apply 2nd.
In any way, a technique you don't feel good with, will never be a good technique for you to apply.

Remember the (2nd) credo of this forum : safety 1st, courtesy 2nd and saving gas 3rd.

Life long, safe and prosper ;-)

Denis.
