new guy here with a mustang

started a little discussion over at turbomustangs.com about gas mileage and got a link to this forum, i'll be bothering you from now on

Welcome, feel free to bother

Doofus McFancypants 06-17-2009 12:32 PM

Tell us about your 'stang?

i have always liked the look of the old Fox 'stang
buddy has a supercharged '93 - wicked sweet
i am sure the mileage sucks but that is not a 1/4 mile goal for him...

nemesis 06-17-2009 04:30 PM

it's a 2000 v6 stang, auto, all stock besides 03 cobra front end and 95 gt 17" wheels. It gets good gas mileage, but there are some room for improvements, and I have lots of ideas how to improve that. My goals are to make it as efficient as possible.

Welcome! I'm new here too. Have you tried any of the hypermiling tips yet?

UfoTofU 06-17-2009 08:42 PM

Invest in instrumentation

Not yet, which one do you like best?

I have gauges that came with the car standard and I have a predator tuner.

Welcome! Mustangs are sweet cars, no matter what they say. Great taste in 03 cobra front end.

Then, you can monitor your driving for fuel efficiency

I looked at few things and got the idea that the slower you drive the better gas mileage you get.

I am interested improving the cars efficiency with similar driving as I do now. I really like Atkinson Cycle engine, I also would like to improve some of the things in drive train so when it's all done anybody can drive it and get similar results without making the car less reliable.

Personally, I've found the gliding, or coasting to be really effective. Pump up your tires to the max sidewall pressure, accelerate slowly, don't go over the speed limit, and coast to a stop (ideally) without brakes.

Good mileage is a very relative term... :) What are you actually getting with it?

I've see too many tire blow outs, premature tire wear, rougher ride and suspension problems with over inflated tires. I don't know about you, but 1mpg extra is not worth all that hassle to me personally.

I get about 22mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway, I'd like to see 40mpg on the highway.

You might be right about that. Personally, my tires' "max" tire pressure is only 40 psi, which is only about 5-6 psi over the recommended pressure. I don't know how much additional MPG that gets me, but I do seem to be able to coast longer than before. And I don't think I'll have too many of the problems you described. I can't imagine running 50+ psi like some folks do, but I think the game here is the combined effects of many small modifications that can add up to a significant difference.

Uh oh! You lost 2 mpg? Maybe you need that additional backpressure.

That's what it is I guess.
