New guy from jersey

hey all just came across this site today and thought it was perfect timing.

i have a 2000 Camaro SS and just got my hands on a 1995 S10, the S10 will be my daily driver and the flagship for my quest for better fuel economy.

doing city driving the camaro gets anywhere from 18-21 MPG but i'd like to see more of that in the truck, hopefully 22+

i dont really do much highway driving so that number is irrelevant to me.

i'm excited to start reading and learning!

"Welcome" Debonair (...shaken, not stirred...) to EcoModder.

...if the S10 isn't going to be used for heavy "hauling" then you might look into the possibly of swapping the rear-axle-ratio from "high" to "low" numbers for better milage.

...is it an automatic (ugh!) or manual (better) transmission?

with taller gears wouldn't it make it lug around more, or take more/longer to get up to a speed?

my goal is for the best city mileage.

and the camaro is an auto, and the truck is a 5 speed, i'm thinking about doing an engine swap in the truck within a year or so.

For the city, you can easily keep the RPM's low enough to benefit FE... so maybe no big need for taller gearing yet. But taller gearing is an FE favorite because of how the cars are manufactured with power in mind. For city FE think too about weight. Every time you have to accelerate from a stop or from any speed, mass has to follow you. Reduce it with goals measured in the hundreds of pounds by find ounces and single pounds as well as big cuts to make.

Study the "pulse and glide," "driving with load," and (if you have a manual trans) the "engine off coasting" techniques of hypermiling.

But a scan gauge or an ultra gauge... they help your driving style adaptations far more than you might guess now.

Lastly, hypermiling does not need to be about slow driving. It has to be about smart driving techniques. The list of hypermile techniques is your best, quickest, way to higher FE numbers.

Good luck, hey.

Debonair, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of numbers you get with your S10 in the city. Is it a 4-banger? If so, we have similar vehicle configuration - 5 speed 4cyl pickup.

Nice Sean Connery avatar, by the way. Your favorite Bond, I take it? He was probably my favorite Bond. I liked Roger Moore too.

thanks California, interesting how naturally i do some of those hypermilling techniques, i have to say cruise control is nice!:D

thanks Kodak i am too, everyone always talks about highway but seems to neglect city. i drove it home fine, then a few days later started running rough so i'm waiting for my tune up parts to come in before i drive it again.

its actually a 4.3, i was looking so hard for a 2.2 5speed that was an extended cab but it was tough. then i came across mine which is a 4.3 w/ 5 speed, extended cab, and black (which was the deal maker).

i've heard the 4.3s get about 17/18 city.

as i said above i plan on doing an engine swap, up till a week ago i was set on getting a 2.0, 2.2, or 2.4L ecotec out of an aveo/cobalt/ion/solstice etc. the city mileage from what i've seen were great, 23-27!

though now i'm thinking about doing a Gen III 4.8L. they can be had for cheap, they produce 270-290 horsepower, and in the fullsize trucks they get about 16.

i figure that in my 5.7L LS1 camaro with a 4l60e trans getting 18-19 city consistently, that i should break 20 with the 4.8L. still havent ruled out the ecotec, just doing extensive reading on both for now.

and yes he's great, in his other movies as well. definitely my favorite bond with roger moore in a close second. daniel craig is very good tool. funny because the first bond i saw when i was a kid was brosnan, ever since i was hooked.
