Welcome aboard! What kind of fuel economy numbers are you getting with your Dakota; and what are you hoping to achieve?

I have been thinking about how I can get better economy out of my vehicles, mainly my dakota. I occasionally save fuel by biking to work, but looking for other ways. I am currently thinking about more common upgrades, like electric radiator fans and reducing excess weight. I am not thinking about big changes on the truck; i still want to use it as a truck. If I am traveling a long way, I'll take the car.

I have not been tracking the mpg much. I think the tank average has been about 17mpg. I would like to get to 20mpg, but I know the truck is heavy and brick like. I am excited to read about the new light duty diesels, too bad the compact truck market is dead.

Former Williamsburg and Fredericksburg VA, here. Get yourself an FE baseline by starting a fuel log here. Drive a few tanks, see if you can then significantly improve. There are some guys here with these trucks, getting well over 20mpg, I think. So you'll have company.

What are the current engine and transmission on your truck? Is it 2WD or 4WD?

BTW eventually you may also consider to get an utility trailer and use it with your car instead...
