New from NJ with a Santa Fe

Hey Everyone!
My name is Joe, I'm 28 and I'm from New Jersey. I drive a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS AWD with the 3.5 liter V6 and I'm not thrilled with the mileage I've been getting. With a mix of about 60/40 city/highway I average about 20 miles per gallon compared to the EPA estimate of 22.

When I really try to drive conservatively, using the manual mode on the transmission to upshift as soon as it will let me and cruising on the highway at no more than 55, I can push it higher. My best number for all highway according to my car's trip computer is 27.5 MPG, and for that I never exceeded 55.

I do have an UltraGauge, though I don't have it hooked up at the moment. I last used it on my 96 4Runner, which I was able to coax from an average of 16 to 20 mpg.

First work I am doing to my Hyundai is maintenance. It's got 111,500 miles and it's due for spark plugs, which will get done when it's warmer since the intake manifold has to come off. I just ordered new shocks, struts and sway bar links as they are tired. After that is done, it will be getting low rolling resistance rubber and an alignment. Next up is a trans, transfer case, front and rear differential fluid change to synthetic and new engine coolant. I've always been changing the oil with synthetic 5w20 and it has a K&N drop in air filter.

As far as fuel economy mods, I'm thinking in terms of aerodynamics. Probably start with a partial grill block off. I'll probably also remove my mudflaps. I'm also considering an underside pan since it's totally open and removing the side view mirrors and using cameras in their place. I already have LED bulbs for everything except the headlights, which are HIDs. I'm hoping to at least hit 24 mpg average when all is said and done.

Sounds like you got a good idea of what you want to do. Time to start sharing pics. :)

I just finished with the front struts and stabilizer links. Rear shocks are later in the week. Then tires and alignment
