New record! 57.45 mpg in the Neon

Hey gang,

Haven't posted much here lately, as I really haven't done much with the old Neon. Mostly just trying to extend my coasts a little further and improving P&G (engine off)... but somehow, I got 57.45 mpg my last fill up! 559 miles on the tank.

I still have a ton of mods to go... but I definitely feel good about this latest number. Still need to: lower it, wheel covers, rear wheel well cover, and kammback setup. I'm thinking my 60MPG tank will be capable pretty easily then, if I keep this up!

So, yup, new record. Prior was 53.52 mpg.

Thanks to all on this site for their knowledge and motivating results!

Congrats! I hope to be in the 50s one day. As your car gets more "slippery" you'll be able to coast farther which will probably extend your tank much farther. Do you use a kill and/or start switch or do you do EOC with the key?

I have a kill switch (just a simple radio shack push button switch wired into killing a relay ground when pushed) and bought a switch for startups, but haven't put it in yet. Clutch bumping makes the on-switch not nearly as necessary, but there are plenty of times I wish I'd get off my lazy butt and put the dang thing in already! :)

Nice work ;)

very nice work

I noticed you did smaller Batt. we both went separate directions there, I went larger because I had high cycle rates of charge from alternator 1/2 my trip is in dark morning head lights on. It worked out for me due to battery doesnt draw charge till 11+ minutes into trip after engine is hot and running at 65 to work on hwy.
I am looking into adding 2 LED cluster bulbs into each Headlamp bezel drilling through plastic and toggle it where It will be my fake headlights and perhaps then I could drop batt size. would be awesome if I could run 25 gage to add tail lamps to rear also 2 separate sets of lights?? Thats good for rain and fog both of which we get alot of here.
I dont require alot of candle power on the HWY and 1/4 is street lamped anyhow.
Again great job

I trickle charge every single night (well, when I get in my garage and don't forget to plug it in... lol). If I miss ~3 days or more, I can hear it in the startup that the battery is a bit lower. I think nighly charge has helped some. I have also converted quite a bit to LED and beefed up some of the electrical wiring. Average trip between charges on the trickle charger is like ~10 miles per day.

Since I'm almost completely city driving, I opted for the less weight of the smaller battery. Plus, they are extremely cheap and make it easier to work around in the engine bay. :)

You may want to try that hybrid capaciter pack they posted here last week.
I can tell from your posts that your very capable of building it.
I would change one thing about it though The use of diodes was never mentioned between the caps I would want them but all else looked awesome.

Congrats! 60 shouldn't be a problem in the future.
