New user from Tulsa - Monster fuel user
Greetings,
So, I have a few vehicles. I can't say that Hypermiing was high on my list of things to do. We had a Minivan, I sold my Focus and bought a BMW 325i, On recent trips I discovered that it is just not very comfortable for a family of 6. ( only had four in the BMW) Bought a monster, 2002 Ford Expedition. My first tank made me sick, 10mpg, followed by my second tank at 9.5. Something had to be done. I read this site and others changed my driving style and Tuned up the Ford. I reached 13+ on this fill up. I will be tring other tactics and playing the "Game" with a instant MPG meter. I ordered a wireless OBD2 adapter that works with my iphone. I can't wait for it to get here to learn more. I also would like to buils a boat tail like on some 18 wheelers to see if that helps on a long trip. |

Is going back to the minivan not an option? You could pay for one in fuel savings!

First buy a good fuel mileage meter if one isn't already in the vehicle. (I installed an MPGuino + JCar module.) By keeping the actual fuel usage on the meter higher than the average mpg reading ensures that your fuel mileage is getting better. Make sure the engine is in a lean burn condition. How? By lifting the throttle and pressing it back down. This forces the ECU to set the engine into lean burn. Look and see how much more the MPG meter went up. You do not have to lift all the way either. Monitor the meter often, but keeping your eyes on the road. Safe driving is paramount. When approaching a hill press down on the accelerator ever so slowly so the lean burn condition stays "in". Try to gain 5 mph. Now, hold the throttle very still and you may crest the hill still in lean burn. This saves a real lot of gas! Always lift the throttle when cresting a hill. Coast downhill a much as possible, not losing too much speed. (Most EFI vehicles shut off the injectors during a Coast @ over 50 mph.) You may find other tricks to driving efficiently. Just pass them on. I am now getting 15-6 mpg on my motor home "The Beast" It's in my garage. |
It seems everyone has a beast, lol. My 92 suburban best tank no mods was 16 mpg. I regularly got 15+ mpg's didn't drive it alot because of the terrible mpg's. Hardly filled it up because it took $12-$160 to fill it. My Celica doubled my mpg's. Just something to consider pick up a $500 beater and save the Ex for when you have to haul the family. Smart driving, aka no exesive accelerating50+ psi in the tires planning your trips for shopping ect... can get you 16+ mpg I am sure.

Well at least you have the benefit of Tulsa being relatively flat. Is your Expedition 2x or 4x?

I would think your little V-8 Expedition should be able to do better than that 13 MPG tank, my V-10 Excursion 4X4, 4" lift with 4.88 gears can give me 14 MPG highway and about 11 to 12 around town using a few of the hypermiling techniques found on this site, nothing crazy just a lot of coasting and close watch on the Ultra-Gauge. Before I swapped to the deeper gears I had 3.73 gears from the factory and could get 15.5 MPG highway with a full load (8) of adults on board. Earlier this year I was able to average 9.0 MPG comming from Savannah GA to Philly with 5 adults and gear while pulling our high profile 9500lb ToyHauler camper. Kept speeds between 63 and 65 MPH and worked the throttle to keep the trans in OD all the way.
I know 9 MPG is a pretty low figure to be bragging about on this site but considering the vehicle, load (18,250lb CGVW) and aero I'm pretty happy with it. Which engine does it have, the 4.6 or the 5.4? BTW have you never considered to make it run in the Miller cycle?
