Calculating "Actual $" Savings

Has anyone calculated there actual $ savings by Eco-driving?

I am going to fill up this evening on the way home - first tank after discovering you guys - and I was thinking, is there a way to quantify the actual impact in terms of $?

Here is my thought.
My last tank ( pre ECO) was 22.4 MPG
lets say this tank is 25 MPG. ( 300 miles and 12 gallons)
and fuel costs $3.00 USD / gal

my Actual bill is 12 gallons x $3 / gal = $36
had I been driving the OLD way = 300 Miles @ 22.4 MPG = 13.4 gal
and I would have paid 13.4 gal x $3 = $40.20

Thus i have saved $4.00 this tank. only changing my driving style

Calculate that over a year for each tank-full and there is you ACTUAL fuel cost savings

Granted the 22.4 mpg was 1 tank and things will vary over time - but this would make it seem more "REAL" from a $ standpoint.

Do you guys do anything like this to track $ saved?
looking at some of the MPG's - I would think it is pretty high.

I save roughly $400 a year going from around 37 mpg to 45 mpg. That is only calculating mileage to and from work.

I just calculated what I would save if I could manage 30mpg instead of 22mpg as was the case with my last tank of gas and here is what I came up with. At 30mpg I can get 480 miles on a tank of gas so I will use that as my millage number for both mpg (my tank is 16g). I also figure that I use 2 tanks of gas per month.

@ 22mpg
480/22 = 21.8g
21.8 x ~$3/g = $65.45
($65.45 x 2) x 12 = $1570.90

@ 30mpg
480/30 = 16
16 x ~$3/g = $48
($48 x 2) x 12 = $1152

So if I can improve my average fuel consumption by just 8 mpg I can save $418.90 per year...not bad for just slowing down and improving my driving efficiency. I'm hoping by the end of the year, however, to increase my millage to almost 40mpg which would save even more.

I changed my driving habits when I realized that the difference between efficient driving and what I had been doing over the previous 70,000 miles I had the car would've saved me enough to buy a second exactly like it.

I use an excel spreadsheet I made for that. I set values for the car I want to compare to (25 city, 34 highway) and I insert my rough estimate of city% driving for the tank along with the cost of gas at fillup time (since I compare a diesel to a gasser).

On my TDI my fuel ecomony vs a 25/34 gasser have been a tad over 3.8¢ per mile since late july. My fuel cost per mile is just below 10¢ (we have a lot of taxes up here...)

This just in...

on the way home I filled the tank
12.4 gallons - 319.2 miles @ $2.78 / gal
25.7 MPG ( up from 22 pre-ECO tank)

so with the small changed made:
- easy accel
- Opprotunity parking
- Pulse and Glide (in neutral)

I have just saved myself $5.46

fill up every 2 weeks or so - that is about $150 in my pocket.
and i am just getting started....

Next up is playing with EOC and tire pressure. I would LOVE to hit 30.

Gotta love this forum

I've calculated that by the time I 'graduate' ecomodder, I'll be saving at least $750 per month. Then again, I'm kind of going extreme in my 'modding' process .

The thing is that even when I was getting very good FE in my Geo (unlike now), I was actually driving more because I had the mentality of "ooh look! I can go further!". So my MPG increase really didn't do anything for my overall cost of driving.

WTF kind of driving are you doing to save you $750 per month?! That's more then I save in an entire year, what do I need to do to pull that off!?
