No more Ford truck manual transmissions

No big surprise there. Once you get into the bigger trucks with air brakes you get guys who cant work an automatic and air brakes to get the truck moving or parked. Wheres parked is what they all say. Just shift to N and set the air brakes.

There isn't a cry face, but it is sad. Though I would not need one, it is still sad.

spacemanspif 07-10-2014 11:32 PM

Big shock? The amount of people who prefer to drive manuals is dropping every day. Americans are too lazy and too distracted to have to worry about actually driving their cars. Start car -> mash gas -> try (very little) to not hit anything is the recipe for driving these days. I love my manual but since I don't think I'll ever buy a new car, I don't think I'm helping the situation padding the numbers for people who buy manuals. I know quite a few people who have though in the last few years and all of them had to track down the closest lot with a manual in stock and basically buy whatever they had with little to no hope of customizing. These cars were a Fit, Fiesta and Elantra.

Still a sad day tho :(

Seems like Venezuela is the only country where Ford still has a manual transmission option for the F-350...

digital rules 07-11-2014 07:15 AM

Yep, people are too addicted to those friggin smartphones to be bothered with such a cumbersome task. They just don't have time to actually drive their cars (oops, trucks) anymore.

user removed 07-11-2014 07:26 AM

If Ford is planning on using a transmission similar to the one on my Fiesta, then I guess I could handle that although I doubt I will ever buy another F150, when the old Ranger is ony seeing 300 miles in two months.

Mech

Really? I drove 2 different Fiesta autos when I was delivering auto parts a couple years ago and they were TERRIBLE. From my understanding they are "automated manuals". Accelerating from a stop was always slightly delayed and you could hear the clutch making noise. Shifts were OK but if you were coasting at say 5mph and needed to stomp on the gas, to pull into traffic from a cross street or parking lot, the car had no idea what to do. Mash the gas and NOTHING happened for half a second, then the engine revved really high and after that the trans finally propelled the wheels. Scary stuff when you are jumping out in front of a loaded dump truck. I'll keep the old slush box any day of week over those piles of elephant dung. Unless Ford fixed the "confused" trans syndrome I can't see how anyone would like those transmissions. Sorry for the thread hijack.

I'm not surprised but it's really sad because it's not just ford dropping the manual transmissions. Subaru doesn't have them on the outback or legacy for 2015 (unless you live in canada) which is pretty surprising because a lot of subaru drivers drive manuals. They are just going to get rarer and rarer until they're completely gone.

jcp123 07-11-2014 11:41 AM

Very very sad for me as well.

Look at high end cars, too, ever more popular with paddle-shifted ZF 8-speeds or DSG/PDKs.

Even Europeans are starting to change their minds. In the words of my aunt, and Austrian native, automatics are for "disabled and old people". But dual-clutch auto boxes are letting Europeans indulge in a bit of laziness without the stigma.

As for myself, it is more than just the fuel economy benefits. It is more than the actual control of having three pedals and a stick to push around. I really just genuinely love to work the pattern, each shift a moment of victory as I try to make it smoother, or quicker, or better timed than the last.

War_Wagon 07-11-2014 12:58 PM

I love it when we rent a car to an Aussie and have to explain how an automatic works to them. "No no, just leave it in D if you are going forwards!" I was pleasantly surprised when a friend of mine recently asked me to teach her how to drive manual. "Well, it's a good thing to know, isn't it?" Yes! Yes it is. Sadly that attitude is the minority.

The wholesale car business doesn't help the third pedal out either. Dealerships looking for used inventory for their lots always deduct huge for a car that has a manual. They are seen as something you will get stuck with until that one rare person that actually wants a stick will come along. So in general you just don't buy them as you will be waiting a long time to sell it. It's sad to see them go, but not surprising.

Make more automatics.
It already prevents my loser-in-law from borrowing my car.

Ecky 07-12-2014 09:26 AM

I passed on dozens of auto Insights before the right 5MT came along.

When I use to work for the commercial truck company we use to add 2 extra features for fleet vehicles. We tapped the oil psi to install an anti grind relay interlock with the starter. This way when we sold a truck to xyz the driver couldnt purposely screw up the starter and think hes getting back at the company or milking the union.

Yes, even if I drive under 45 mph I can shift to sport mode, select 7th ratio and beat the drive mode mpg of my cvt.

sid 07-13-2014 08:40 PM

Another reason I traded my 1999 Ranger for a 2010 four years ago. That, and I could still get a small truck that fits in my garage, gets over 30 mpg, and has crank windows and manual door locks.

It is amazing how many people buy vehicles that don't even fit in their garages.

YeahPete 07-14-2014 11:41 AM

Just don't buy new. I'll show them!

No need to buy a vehicle that fits when the garage is filled to the ceiling with unused exercise equipment and junk.

It sure is nice not having to de-ice a car in the morning, or get into one that is 140 degrees.

Give a shift...save the manuals campaign...all good stuff but it's not sinking in :(

I really kind of despise automatics these days.
