Noob with 2012 Ford Focus
So far by my manual calculations I am getting an average of 32 MPG. I want to go higher! I just traded in my V8 Lincoln that got 17 MPG for my Focus and I really love this car because of the money it saves me.
Let the mods begin. :) |
Welcome to the forum.
There are a few members here getting great results from late model Focuses (Foci?). |
Thanks for the welcome. I am hoping to get better GM. This current tank I am at 37.8 mpg.

I had the sedan complete with wing and plus size wheels and tires. I aired them to 50 psi and coast the hell out of it. I went from 19 to 70 mpg.
It has an auto starter, so no need to hold it. Just tap it, then shift to drive. You got to feather the throttle to get the tranny to go to od, 1500 rpms vs 2 grand and about 40 mph. Then FAS the hell out of it. :turtle: Second pulse and glide once at higher speeds. |
Hey Gasninja!
I just joined myself after lurking for a while. I see you've been doing your own calculations. Doesn't the Focus have it's own built in mpg gauge? I've read the factory ones are not as 100% percent accurate, but it could be good to measure your results up against, and see your mpg at different speeds by resetting it when you get to that speed (it only provides average mpg, not real-time). In my family Focus, the mpg gauge shows up if you keep hitting the "info" button, located on the bottom below the radio, a/c, and power outlet. At 45 mph in a long, flat, winding road with nothing but green lights, I was getting 50.4 mpg, this with only occasional breaking-to-slow-down-slightly here and there! Ours is a 2010 coupe. Happy modding! EDIT: Added details. |
Hi MileMonger -
That sure fits with this speed vs. MPG graph for the Focus: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post328333 |
Hi MetroMPG! :)
That's a great chart, thanks! (It's on page 6 for anyone else looking for it.) Are those this year's models? I also recorded my mpg on the highway portion of my trip from work, resetting the gauge once I hit 65 mph, and staying between 65 and 70 for about 9 miles. The average for the dates when traffic was good (around the same time of the day) and the drive quite smooth (4 trips) averages out to 42.1 mpg. I tried to stay right in the middle of the two speeds, and always logged the data right at the exit from the highway. That's about 2 mpg better than the chart. It might be lower than that, but the AVG mpg always flatlined at or just below 42. Sorry for getting off-topic... over-excited new guy over here. |
That's from a MotorTrend article from June of this year, so I'd assume either 2012 or 2013 models.
And welcome, over-excited new guy! |
Still chugging along
Over the last 7 months I am averaging about 34.5 MPG (highway and city combined) which is not bad, but not where I want to be. I've only had one 39 MPG tank and haven't broken the 40 mpg barrier. This site has really helped me change my driving habits which has improved my gas mileage, and made driving more relaxing. I just watch people fly past me (while giving me the bird) as I am going the speed limit (60 mph). I think of all of the gas they are wasting.
I am thinking of pulling the spare tire and jack out of the trunk. Risky, I know, but I really don't have anything else to mod. Really want to start averaging 38 to 40 mpg combined. |
Other than FASing the hell out of it is to lightly accelerate to about 40 where the torque converter locks up. You will see your rpms drop suddenly to about a thousand. Then light accelerate up to your desired speed.
In no time you will double that 36. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...41779943_n.jpg |
