Notable eco-cars (old & new) spotted in the wild: post your pics!

2 Attachment(s)
I've noticed the occasional thread being posted when people spot notable vehicles in the wild. Thought it would be fun if we gathered them all in one place.

(If you've already posted a thread, post a link to it here, or copy your pics over!)

I'll start off with this one spotted today. Haven't seen one of these for at least 8 years back in rust belt Ontario...

1989-?? Pontiac Firefly Turbo
(Spotted in Vancouver, BC, Canada.)

http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1357417212

http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1357417212

I did a double-take this AM walking past this rare beastie. So let's say in 1989 you wanted an efficient runabout, but ~55 hp from the naturally aspirated 993cc 3-cylinder wasn't enough, and you couldn't bring yourself to buy the 1.3L 4-cylinder. Turbo, it is then! With 70 tire-smoking horses!

EPA rates the 1989 n.a. 5-speed Chevy Sprint (same car): 38 MPG city / 45 hwy / 41 combined.
For comparison, the turbo car was rated: 31 / 38 / 34.
These are the 2008 "revised" figures.

Quote:

From the brochure...

Fashionable, fun and fast. The Turbo Firefly sets itself apart from its fellow Firefly models in a number of ways.

Turbo Firefly boasts a turbocharged, intercooled, multi-port fuel-injected version of Firefly's 3-cylinder/5-speed manual powertrain and generates 45% more horsepower (70HP @ 5500 RPM) than the standard Firefly engine.

Turbo Firefly has been clocked at 9.4 seconds, zero to sixty, on the GM test track with a professional driver at the wheel.

Special Equipment
The car rides on P165/70R-12 steel-belted all-season radials, tires that are wider than those on the regular Firefly.

An upgraded suspension features front stabilizer bar and specific shock absorbers and spring rates.

Aero ground-effects: front and rear air dams and rocker panel skirts. Dual tail pipes.

The Turbo Firefly Exterior
To begin with, you get your choice of bright red or aquablue with colour-matched wide body-side mouldings. Other distinctive Turbo exterior touches include:

* White wheel covers.
* Body-colour bumpers and rub strips.
* Dual black sport mirrors.
* Special "Turbo" and "Intercooler" graphics on the body-side.

The Turbo Firefly Interior
As the picture below indicates, Turbo Firefly is distinguished by specific interior trim in Charcoal and special steering wheel with "Turbo" graphic. Other interior features standard in Turbo Firefly include:

* Custom Knit Cloth upholstery.
* Split-folding rear seat-back.

There is a smurf blue one of those parked at the end of my block. I also had a first gen one I nabbed at an auction for $150, but the deal got cancelled as it was only supposed to be sold as parts only so I couldn't get a regi for it. It was bad, but it wasn't THAT bad lol.

Dang eco cars cluttering up the place!

MetroMPG 01-05-2013 09:33 PM

It was probably in better shape than the last couple I've bought in Ontario!

MetroMPG 01-06-2013 02:51 PM

Ha! That Metro strech looks like something the guys on Top Gear would make.

Coincidentally, I saw a YouTube vid of it a couple of days ago, filmed on the road in the wild, and the camera operator had no idea what it was. Mystery solved!

What is it about the Metro? It's the canvas for so many bizarre projects (eco & otherwise).

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 01-06-2013 07:53 PM

Am I one of the few who actually like the Suzuki Swift/Chevy Metro??? I'd want to get one to leave it stock.

freebeard 01-07-2013 02:42 AM

I've seen one or two in metallic blue with 5-spoke mags that were just neat.

If I wasn't driving what I am; it'd probably be a Metro or a Subaru Brat with a T-top.

mechman600 01-07-2013 11:19 AM

My brother in law has seen this thing in the wild a couple of times:
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/...pscdbc7f22.jpg
Not really "ECO", but compared to a pickup truck it's probably pretty good!

War_Wagon 01-07-2013 01:25 PM

Oh my, I kind of doubt the RCMP will consider the red tuck tape to be "lighting" on that 4 foot rear bumper extension / accident waiting to happen. How has he not had that thing taken off the road yet??

MetroMPG 01-07-2013 01:27 PM

I remember that pic! And it's even a crew cab! :D

With sliding doors, mind you!
And are those speakers in the bed?

"Redneck Ridgeline" - too funny! :D

orange4boy 01-28-2013 01:28 AM

I drove the brand new Turbo Firefly a couple of times when I worked at a dealership just after high school. It was pretty snappy but with some lag and squirrely steering when you punched it. Sounded like a sewing machine on crack.

And just to stay off topic with the van weirdness, I give you, not my Previa Pickup:

http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0121_large.jpg

All it needs is an aerocap and it'd be perfect. Trust me, It has crossed my mind.

freebeard 01-28-2013 03:37 AM

I always liked the Previa, mostly for the George Jetson roofline. This loses that, but it looks very well done.

Apparently Canadian Previas had an option for a tach in the dash.

I wouldn't do it, but if you'd ever do it you could also try to get the cab top more rounded, instead of that sharpy edge.

Saw a Tesla Model S cruising down the freeway this morning.

I've seen a bunch of Roadsters before, but never a Model S.

Ironically, the day i stopped to take a pic of the van, the owner(band member) and his wife were walking out of the church. They notice my car, and we started talking for 10-15mins, had a good chat and he gave me a few tips on the smoothies...

He mentioned, using a few 2"x2" cutouts of drywall sand paper, folding them and pinching them between the rim lip and the smoothy. While using a dab of 2part epoxy on one pinched area to keep it in place for good measure. Mentioned he found that particular set on ebay, and ran him about $100 including shipping for the entire set.

Otherwise he seemed generally interested, but Fe wasn't his focus and never measured if it had a difference, he just liked the way it looks.

sheepdog 44 01-28-2013 04:59 PM

Sorry no pics.

My co-worker drives a 5speed diesel ford escort from the eighties. It's reported to get anywhere from 45-60+mpg, but i haven't asked him about it yet. Really rare thing to behold.

Several weeks ago i spotted a silver VW Golf with moondiscs hubcaps on. I waited till he showed up and we had a nice talk. Apparently his dad put them on, but i saw no other noticeable mods, so i'm not sure if he lurks on these forums.

I have a large tally sheet of every rare car i've spotted for future eco-rally organizing in my area. Leafs, Volts, a nice sport edition metro, a beatup black crx HF thats been under a tarp for years etc.

RiderofBikes 01-28-2013 05:19 PM

all the crx's around the kc area have been molested(in some way)... but also still dirt cheap ($2k>$1k) if you can find one running decently after a d16 swap, also throwing out the Hf trans:( but ive seen ALOT of MG's under tarps, lookin for a swap of there own...

I see your optional tach, and I raise you a 5 speed.

http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...cture003-1.jpg

We also had AWD ones and supercharged ones, but I have no idea what combos of those three you could get, or which of those were available south of the border.

War_Wagon 01-28-2013 09:40 PM

Now that I am looking through pics, here's some more Wet Coast rust free (mostly) cars floating around.

The Superfly - 3cyl 5 speed, ended up giving it to a friend to give to someone that needed a car. It had been sitting there for about 7 years, actually fired up with a jumpstart and drove out on it's own power! http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...nsight/SF1.jpg

92 VX, even up here these things rust out bad in the rear 1/4s http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ht/Outside.jpg

96 3cyl 5 speed metro, no rust but it needed axles & 2nd gear synchro http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ight/Metro.jpg

2000 Insight, this was for sale in a parking lot last year. Decent mileage, new IMA battery, and a reasonable price I think, can't remember what it was but I am thinking under $6k http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ht/Insight.jpg

Random Sprint, I saved it from the crusher then found out the motor was really noisy in it, no one wanted it, I needed cash for Christmas, so back to the scrap guy it went. http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...t/IMGP0136.jpg

freebeard 01-28-2013 09:43 PM

I like Previas. One could probably be pieced together with all those options.

I once saw a turbo AWD Dodge van kicking b*tt at Portland International Raceway.

War_Wagon 01-28-2013 09:59 PM

Turbos are where it's at if you want to go fast. One day I will find another Turbo Firefly. Don't get me wrong, I know THAT one won't be fast, but it's the principle lol, those things are hard to find, and it would be fun to see what kind of FE you could get out of one. Having driven naturally aspirated 1.0L Suzuki clones, I have to say that for me personally sometimes I need a little more push than they offer, I think a turbo'd one would be fun to horse around with.

I like Previas as well. They are comfortable to drive, and have a huge amount of space in the back. And after seeing that pic of the pickup conversion, I am tempted to turn the Prev 5 speed I use for a storage locker into one. Someone get me a big bottle of Jack Daniels and a chop saw lol!

freebeard 01-29-2013 01:58 AM

Do it!

Just don't round off the back of the cab, you will get better aerodynamic separation.

Then you can make an aerocap out of fish scales bandsawn out of wooden shingles. Like this, only wood:

sheepdog 44 01-30-2013 05:10 PM

Saw a blue VX at the parking lot a few days ago, and today a Smart car and a newer civic HF with the hybrid trim and wheels.

MetroMPG 01-30-2013 05:37 PM

Doesn't count without pics!

I submit this non-counter, also without pic: just spotted a PHEV Prius 20 minutes ago. Had power company signs on it. Also a boxy, tiny Suzuki Kei van a day ago.

Must.. bring... camera... on .. walks...

sheepdog 44 01-30-2013 06:17 PM

I'll get my camera up and running! I need to show you guys how immaculate my co-workers 80's diesel ford escort is. A PHEV Prius is pretty rare, never seen one. Teslas are too wallstreet money for around here.

Doesn't your cellphone has a camera? BTW I wanna see this Diesel Ford Escort. I've never seen one with the Mazda RF Diesel back here in Brazil, the only ones I've ever seen (with Argentinian plates) had the British 1.8L Endura-D engine.

MetroMPG 01-30-2013 08:32 PM

What cellphone? :P I haven't got one yet. They're just a fad.

War_Wagon 01-31-2013 07:09 PM

Here's one for ya. I was about 5 minutes late for the auction this morning. This was car #3, I got there as car #7 was going through. '99 Metro, 1.0l, 5 speed, the cleanest, straightest original paint body I have ever seen on one of these things, still has the dealer installed "Sport" decals on it. High KMs and it needed a drivers seat, I didn't drive it but it ran fine. Ya, you don't want to know how cheap it sold. The ironic part was I was late to the auction because I had to move my 4cyl/auto firefly into a different spot at work, so one kept me from getting the other one lol, it must have been jealous.

http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...psa042a6ce.jpg

MetroMPG 01-31-2013 08:54 PM

"Embarrassment of riches" is the saying that comes to mind. (Too bad you can't get rich selling them!)

War_Wagon 01-31-2013 08:59 PM

Ok maybe not an eco-car exactly, but it kind of is, and it is such a weird combo that I had to put it up. Any of the following options are not really rare on their own, but I have never seen them all in one place before.

Full load Yukon with leather (no big deal). 2 door (hard to find, up here anyway), 4x4, barn doors in the back (now THAT'S hard to find lol). And it's a diesel!! (I have only ever seen a few diesels in these trucks ever up here) This thing must have been a special order, it's too weird to be naturally occurring. If it isn't a special order, then a room full of monkeys with typewriters somewhere just finished writing Hamlet. If I had the space/facilities/time to make biodiesel, I would have bought this thing on sight.

http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2519d5ad.jpg

Oh, and if you ever see on of these style Tahoes / Yukons or a half ton pickup from the same style, and want to be able to tell real quick if it's a diesel, look at the front bumper. You can see on this one the square holes on either side of the front license plate holder, only the diesels have those. It allowed more airflow to the rad. Kinda like how only the new Ecoboost powered F150s have the front license plate set to one side instead of being centered. Man I spend too much time looking at the front of trucks apparently ha ha

I saw an original paint '92 Civic CX 5 speed too, but it was a little crusty in the back. Not bad, but not worth buying, up here anyway. Didn't bother with a pic. I think it sold for $500 but I wasn't really paying attention.

These rigs, altough usually bashed for being gas-guzzlers (ironically even their Diesel versions are often called so), are an interesting alternative as an "environmental" vehicle. Diesels doesn't require spark plugs to be changed so often, and either a set of glowplugs or a grid-heater lasts longer than spark plugs, and are also easier to use alternative fuels. But if I'd get one of those I'd consider to replace the stock engine for one fitted with direct injection, such as the Cummins 4BT, since it can be worked around to run even on pure ethanol (what seems impossible to do with an indirect-injection Diesel).

War_Wagon 02-01-2013 11:56 PM

I'd run biodiesel with propane injection. I would not want to run a 6000 pound SUV off a 4BT, you'd need to time your commutes with a calendar lol. I know that the big Frito Lay delivery trucks came with them, but for something that I would need to cruise at highways speeds and be able to get around town without holding up traffic, I don't think that would work for me. I have an old Jeep Comanche pickup that has been my ongoing 4x4 project for the last few years, now that I would put a 4BT in. But for the amount of time it would get used, I don't think it would be worth the time and money to do the conversion.

Who remembers the Fiat 126p?
http://x.garnek.pl/ga9726/7b2f28218f...szej_serii.jpg

Well, today came across this picture of how someone aeromodded one:
http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1359902172
I have no information about who, when, where and why (the pic is from an automotive site where users post their "wild" pictures), but I can see that the author of this piece of art had at least some idea about aerodynamics: Full Kamm-ification with good angles and rear skirts, side skirts and even front wheel skirts. Me likes:thumbup:
Maybe this is for some (sci-fi) movie? Can't find any info:(

MetroMPG 02-03-2013 01:50 PM

That's .. wow.

If the site where you found the image still has it, try googling the filename of the picture. It might show up on other sites... or.. wait! Google Images has an image search feature - you could try uploading that image and see where else it appears.

Piwoslaw 02-03-2013 03:18 PM

Here is the page:
Polak mieszkajacy na Marsie - Fotosy - Poboczem.pl
The image appears to be embedded in a less than obvious way, or at least I don't know how to find its name.

I read through the comments and only one (posted ~1h ago) says anything about aerodynamics, even reminds that the original 126p has Cd = 0.49:eek: Other comments are not relevant. The picture was posted on 17.04.2012. The user who posted it is most likely not the Aero126p's owner, this is only one of a few funny pics in his album. Unfortunately there appears to be no way to get in touch with him.
