Ohio with a 1.0t ford focus
Hello all. I've been in the market for a new fuel efficient daily driver and I was looking at the usual suspects like the corolla or civic and even considering a prius c, but after some unusually bad service for someone ready to buy a new car, I checked the ford site and noticed they offered the ford focus se with a 1.0 3cylinder ecoboost and a 6 speed manual. I didn't know such a car existed honestly but when I looked into it further they happened to be offering a hefty discount on it from the site. So I sent a request to a dealership and went and checked it out. Well I wasn't expecting much but the car was nice enough so I picked it up mostly just because it was a great price. Well long story short I've been very impressed with how well it drives handling and comfort wise, the features of the car and how well that little 1 liter can move the focus around with the manual.
I'm excited to see what kind of mileage I can get out of it with this powertrain. I'm still on my first tank and have been doing almost exclusively stop and go city driving including revving a little higher than usual sometimes to break it in and I'm getting around 30. It's epa rated for 30c 40h. I think the car will shine in the 40mph+ territory where it's steady around 40-50mpg and in certain conditions even more. Well I look forward to lurking and posting some more about my efficiency adventures with my new focus. Thanks for reading! |
Welcome to the site ecoford!
The 1.0T Focus is pretty rare from my understanding. It'll definitely be interesting to see what kind of mileage you get out of it. |
A 1.0 6mt focus is on my list of desired new cars, I am also eager to see what you can do with it. I think I have calculated the cruising rpms before for the focus and fiesta 1.0s, and the focus actually cruises at a lower rpm.
|
Welcome!
Lucky you. I've yet to try a 1.0T Focus OR Fiesta. I've read good things about the Fiesta. Did you get a hatch or sedan? I'll be curious to read about your MPG when you fill (and the accuracy of the onboard gauge). |
Thanks guys I'll let you know what the mpg on the first fill up looks like. And its a sedan model. The gear ratios are pretty long even though its got a small engine. As I recall it was a few hundred rpm under 3k at 70mph in 6th. I've been happy with how smooth the gearbox is especially for a ford.
|
Gotta be smoother than their automated clutched gearbox!

The average fuel consumption in Europe for this car is 35.47 mpg US / 42.6 mpg IMP / 6.63 lit/100km.
https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/overv...st&powerunit=2 However, the 10th percentile driver is averaging 39.6 US / 47.6 IMP Unfortunately it is one very heavy car for a 1.0 lit engine to pull. |
Very cool find! Most of us would likely have to hunt for one. It's on my short list of new cars I'd consider. Ohio has great terrain but terrible wind for mileage-minded driving. I'll look forward to seeing what you can get as well :)
|
Considering that a few years ago this engine was prefered by around 25% of new Ford buyers in Europe, it might not be so bad compared to the 1.6 Ti-VCT or even the 2.0 Duratec (which in Europe is only available in Russia and other CIS countries).

Fuelly shows 1.0t Foci anywhere from 28-39mpg, which either way is ahead of the Ford Focus average. A quick view of 2017 1.0t's had the majority getting 35+mpg.
|
I wouldn't consider it a heavy car at all. From the ford site the focus se with the 1.0 manual comes in at 2974. Thats light at least according to my standards, especially since its a decently roomy car. And it certainly feels light around the corners. But I do think the 1.0t has to work a little bit harder to get the car moving. Once its going and the turbo is spooled its got plenty of power but getting it going i have noticed requires a little bit more gas and clutch slip than I'm used to. So having this small of an engine does have its downsides but I'm really impressed with the power and mileage once the car is rolling a bit. I'll do my first fill up soon.
|
I guess that's a matter of perspective and what you're used to. My first Focus was just under 2600 lbs. My Civic is just under 2300lbs. My Echo was another 200lbs lighter than the Civic. Heck, my Mustang weighed about what your Focus does.
Cars have just gotten fat in the last decade. Do let us know how the numbers are :) I still think the 1.0EB Focus and Fiesta are two of the neatest small cars we've gotten in the last 5-10 years. |
Have a look at this thread to see the correlation between vehicle mass and actual real world fuel consumption for cars with 3 cylinder 1 litre engines.
http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ion-34666.html The ford focus with 85kg driver/fuel is 46% heavier than Mitsubishi Mirage with 85 kg driver/fuel. This results in an increase in real world fuel consumption of 39%. Ideally the car should have been lighter but failing that the engine should have been bigger. Interestingly, Ford has now stretched the engine to a 1.1 but so far only naturally aspirated versions of it has been released in the Ford Fiesta. |
Without having seen specs of the recently revealed next generation Focus, I bet it's lighter than the prececessor.

As far as the car overall i'm still very happy. However, unfortunately there is one mechanical issue so far, I'm getting a kind of clunking sound intermittently between shifts mostly in 3rd and 4th (especially downshifts). It happens very rarely and doesn't effect the shifting of the car, but it is an annoying noise when it happens. I took it in but of course couldn't reproduce the issue with a tech in the car. I'm gonna have to wait until it happens more consistently or i figure out how to reproduce it. I'm not a mechanic, but it seems to me to be something slightly off in the clutch or flywheel. Obviously I'm a little disappointed in that but it doesn't actually have any impact on the driving and shifting of the car so I'm not gonna stress over it. Other than that its solid and I think it'll serve me well. |
Thanks for the update! Glad you're enjoying it.

That is pretty remarkable. |
I was reading your post and thought about this recall but I guess your car is too new
Ford is issuing a safety recall in North America for approximately 6,000 2013-16 Ford Focus cars with 1.0-liter Fox GTDI engine and B6 manual transmission and 2013-15 Ford Fusion with 1.6-liter GTDI engine and B6 manual transmission vehicles for potential clutch plate fracture with risk of fire. In affected vehicles, repeated high-energy clutch slip input made while a driver changes gears can lead to premature clutch lining wear, reducing the mechanical properties of pressure plate material. Repeated cyclic heating and cooling events may cause cracks around the outer edge of the pressure plate. Torque capacity reduction due to clutch lining wear can cause excessive slip, introducing a large amount of energy and heat into the pressure plate. Structural failure or fracture of the pressure plate eventually may occur. Leaking transmission fluid near an ignition source can lead to the risk of an engine compartment fire. Ford is not aware of any fires, accidents or injuries associated with this issue. Affected vehicles include: 2013-16 Ford Focus vehicles with 1.0-liter Fox GTDI engines and B6 manual transmissions built at Michigan Assembly Plant, July 21, 2014 to June 30, 2016 2013-15 Ford Fusion vehicles with 1.6-liter Sigma GTDI engines and B6 manual transmissions built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, March 9, 2012 to June 28, 2014 The recall involves approximately 5,872 vehicles in North America with 5,357 in the United States and 515 in Canada. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18S07. Dealers will update Focus vehicles with software that will detect and prevent prolonged clutch slip and will evaluate the clutch for wear and replace as needed. |
