Old School Diesel thermal efficiency improvement?
Hello all,
My 1998 Peugeot 306 has a 1.9 litre XUD turbo diesel. It has the intercooler on top of the engine, which is not ideal from a cooling point of view- it also means a fair whack of heat escapes via the bonnet. Do I move the intercooler to the front and add insulation onto the bonnet? Also the car has no undertray so I was considering putting foam insulation on the sump and block to improve warmup.. you can see what I mean in the pics below: Intercooler setup http://thumbsnap.com/s/t7GKnPff.jpg My bonnet after approx 10 mins and 1.5 mile running- seems to have melted a fair bit of snow! http://thumbsnap.com/s/hD2FT1oI.jpg This is the sump setup- just hanging out in the breeze:http://thumbsnap.com/s/ZMqPBGB9.jpg |
Sure you should move the intercooler to the front and add an undertray, not just for heat retention but also to improve the underbody airflow. And you can add a layer of some thermal insulator to the external side of the oil pan and to the valve cover.
