old time Tacoma owner lookin' to get more MPG

As you can see from my sig I've got a '99 Taco and lookin' for any tips to squeeze out more MPG from my rig. I currently get about 19.5 MPG, but I've got a huge a$$ brush guard up front, maybe I should toss that thing, huh?

Welcome to the site. How much does your brush guard weigh? From what I've seen with my Jeep, armor doesn't make that big of a deal if its only a few pieces.

Very clean taco

Brush guard likely won't much much of a difference on or off. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm guessing the guard weighs at least 150 lbs. or so, it looks pretty heavy.

Welcome to the site! I would look around at some of the stuff Chris D has been doing recently and get yourself a scangauge.

DifferentPointofView 03-24-2008 10:41 PM

well it isn't another one of those taco guys :D yes, welcome.

Judging by the sig... looks like he already has one...

I constantly carry around over 100lb's worth of subwoofer-ing power and it doesn't effect it much... although it's not effecting aero... You should be able to pull some higher numbers than me. I have a 4.0L I6, and my aero is worse. Although I don't know how you're geared... My gears are pretty high... I don't know if I'm heavier or not, but... you should be able to pull 25+. I think I'm gonna do that this tank :D

Really? It looks like your run of the mill tube bumper. I'd say 50-60lbs tops

humanoid 03-24-2008 10:49 PM

One more question. How can I get that ecomodder sig that most of you have?

SVOboy 03-24-2008 10:59 PM

When you enter a fuel log you should be able to see it displayed at the bottom and then you can just make the link to it an img and link with the forum tags.

Cool, I've already started to do that, but I'll have to wait for my next fillup before I can fill in that info. Thanks for the tip!

It's all relative. 150lbs in a 3500lb truck is around 4% of it's weight, and for a pickup truck, the ratio of energy needed to roll the vehicle compared to the energy needed to push the vehicle through the air is about 1:1-1:5 depending on whether you're driving along at 25mph in the city or doing 70mph on the freeway, so you're looking at a .8-2% difference.

Hmmm, never thought of it that way....

Hey another Taco guy, welcome. I'm hoping pull a few MPGs out of my gas sucking taco too. But "red" comes first. Check out "akashic" post with his taco. Finally someone put pizzas on a 4X4.
