Ontario to raise freeway speed limit in pilot project

Ontario's current maximum freeway speed is 100 km/h (62 mph).

The 2-year pilot project will increase the limit to 110 km/h (68 mph) on several sections of our 400-series freeways.

Ontarians now find themselves in a position where they're complaining about fuel costs AND celebrating the ability to drive faster on the highway!

Cognitive dissonance, anyone? :D

Gotta hustle that empty SUV to... to... wherever it is they go.

Happy travelers and more tax revenue from the increase in fuel usage. Win-win for the government.

Our state has increased road funding 20% raising speed limits

Highway deaths went up too

Nothing like giving people what they want

In all seriousness, it should be based on what is safe, not what is efficient. You can chose an inefficient car, why not inefficient speed? Besides the speed limit would be more like 60Km/hr if it was all about absolute saftey and efficiency. I bet it has been 100 for generations going back to when cars and roads were no where near as developed as they are today.

Fuçk Doug Ford 700 times with a cactus for everything else he's doing, but thank god they're finally considering raising the speed limit.

When you drive from Atlanta GA to Hamilton ON it's a long drive like when you get to Windsor you're like "Yay after 11 hours I'm finally in Canada!" but then you realize you have another 3 or 4 hours to go and you're tired and so you gotta make a choice, do I keep it safe (from OPP) at 119 or do I risk the brisket and go 129 or 135?

The 400 series highways (outside of Hamilton and Toronto and maybe a couple other municipalities) are very large and safe compared to the US Interstate system, you could safely drive 200kmh on them. When I lived in ON like I hypermiled my Insight because I was poor and whatnot but like sometimes you just gotta get somewhere and 100 is simply too low of a speed.

Also cars are way safer now anyways.

They put a few highways over here in BC to 120...a year later, they dropped 'em back down to 110, as there was a major spike in and the level of accidents.

Probably a study sponsored by Eh? Metal Sign Company, BC.
We had a spike in overall fatality after the increase from 75 to 80 mph on our interstates in Montana but unfortunately for the control freaks, the fine details showed not on those interstates. Then the next year it was down again. It basically corresponded to the price of fuel more than anything else, meaning more miles driven with less expensive gas. By that logic the higher speed limit and increased fuel consumption would lead to less driving overall as well. Almost all of the fatalities had one thing in common, no seat belt use. You might move the scales 5% one way or the other with speed limits, but get the seatbelt thing down and you will move the needle more like 80%.

I've had several cars that get better fuel economy at 70mph than 60
hell, with the 0.64:1 overdrive in my 6.0L gto and all the low end torque,
she got 15-20% better fuel economy @ 75+ then at 55-60

I doubt that's the case for most of the cars being driven by forum members here tho

^ I've heard of such beasts, but have never seen it in any of the vehicles I've driven.

Comparison is always in top gear?

The car I've tested to closest to yours would probably be:
