Ouroboros batteries

Quote:

Instead of lithium, the new batteries store electricity in gold nanowires. The original aim of the experiment was simply to make a solid-state battery that used an electrolyte gel rather than a liquid to hold its charge - lithium batteries contain liquid, which makes them extremely combustible and also sensitive to temperature.
Batteries "typically die in dramatic fashion after 5,000 or 6,000 or 7,000 cycles at most [...] testing showed that the new system could withstand 200,000 charge cycles over three months and only lose 5 percent of its capacity."

I actually wondered if this was Unicorn Corral material, but it linked to Popular Science, which pretty much had the same article:

Researchers have accidentally made batteries that could last 400 times longer - ScienceAlert

If they ever did die, there would be places saying "We buy gold batteries!"

This sounds similar, but solid-state, and without using gold. They do not explain how it is supposed to last hundreds of charge cycles, but they have not figured out how the gold ones work!
Scientists are working on rechargeable batteries with almost infinite lifetimes - ScienceAlert

"The first: microscopic vulnerabilities in the structure of the battery material steer the lithium ions haphazardly through the cell, eroding the battery in seemingly random ways, much like rust spreads across imperfections in steel."
Here's why your phone and laptop batteries degrade so fast - ScienceAlert

"Huawei says it has managed to bond special heteroatoms to the graphite molecules in the anode section of the battery to get this process moving faster, without decreasing energy density or battery life."
This new battery charges 10 times faster than the one in your smartphone - ScienceAlert

"a fair chunk of battery drain is actually caused by bugs and inefficiencies due to insomniac-style apps that wake up and simply can’t go back to sleep when it’s their rightful bedtime."
The code is available for free, but not as an app yet.
This code can help you get an extra 16% smartphone battery life - ScienceAlert

"the device's party trick is being able to reduce the time a phone's components spend searching for a signal and making a connection, and its makers say that could lead to an energy saving of up to 45 percent."
but manufacturers would rather have smaller antennae (and cases).
This new smartphone antenna could do wonders for battery life - ScienceAlert

Ouch! "phones integrated with the StoreDot technology would cost up to $150 more than the average smartphone does now, and would be able to handle around 1,500 recharge cycles for a three-year lifespan."
This new battery can fully charge your smartphone in 30 seconds - ScienceAlert

"the Nikola Lab device has an antenna that picks up the ambient waves. It then uses what's known as a rectifier circuit to convert the alternating current into a direct current, which it puts back into the phone. "It's actually working off the energy of the phone itself," he says."
New smartphone case charges your phone by harvesting electricity from the air - ScienceAlert

This one channels light outside of the visible range to photovoltaic receptors at the edges: New transparent solar cells can be used on windows, smartphone screens - ScienceAlert

"If you're getting tired of announcements about breakthroughs in battery technology, that's understandable:"
Ha! I will stop there!
Researchers create lithium-air battery that could be 10x more powerful than lithium-ion - ScienceAlert

Thank you for posting. What is the Ouroboros in the title refer to?

I have an Razer Ouroboros mouse here at work, and that's why I noticed this topic.

I was wondering how many people would read this with the Red Dwarf reference. In that show, there is a line of batteries that are not rechargeable, they somehow never run out of energy. It is also the title of an episode where they alter the past to ensure humans survive.

Well, no. It's working by grabbing energy off power lines. Basically the same thing as a wireless charger (or indeed, a transformer). Would probably work pretty well if you lived close to a 120+ kV transmission line.

Ouroboros in Greek mythology is the serpent (or sometimes a dragon) that lives by eating its own tail.

They actually explain the legend in "Red Dwarf."

But then we'd have to understand the "Red Dwarf" reference.
