Passenger side mirror delete, complete
So my first eco-modification is completed (not counting the 5-speed swap haha). Also first time I used fiberglass. :)
I went for a stylish, factory-looking block-off plate using a spare mirror. On to the pictures... Stock mirror http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0079.jpg http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0077.jpg Spare cut off http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0082.jpg After rough shaping, on the car http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0083.jpg A piece of plastic "foil" was taped on the outside to create a base for the fiberglass http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0086.jpg First layer http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0089.jpg Fast forward, fiberglass finished, rough shaped http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0099.jpg First layer of body filler http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0120.jpg First layer of body filler sanded, second applied http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/u...llIMG_0123.jpg |
Then after 4-5 coats of primer and 5-6 coats of Tremclad rust paint (most were watersanded away lol)

seamless
It's a pity that so few will ever realize what you've done, and all the effort that went into it.Truly a seamless modification which would embarrass even the automakers.Really top drawer! Thanks!

Thank you kindly ! :)

I agree, very well done indeed. I hope that you can see some good results from it.
|
Nice!
|
that looks almost exactly like what I did on my car. For me it was worth 1.4 MPG I think.
Are you going to add a mirror on the inside? |
I used black gorilla tape backed by a piece of cardboard. Yours looks much nicer. Good job.

I was going to but I installed my outside mirror back for now. I did find a spot where I could do some A-B-A-B testing, I shall see when I feel like doing it. :o |
Very nice job!!! We just need thousands, if not millions of people to follow you!
|
Now you can integrate a camera on there... ;)

I did take some pictures of rain on my side window... there was turbulence along the A-pillar but not much at "mirror" height. :D

I find this thread a bit strange, because for years I've thought of adding a passenger side mirror to my old car.
When you want to get in the right lane, you are blind to what is racing up behind you. No passenger side mirror in 1977. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...che/P-Side.jpg In another thread they said both side mirrors together account for .1 in your Cd, I don't see how removal of one mirror can make a 1-mpg difference. Maybe it prevents you from getting in the fast lane for fear of having to get back over, but that would be about it. Just my two cents....................safety first. |
Wow, that looks incredible! Looks like it's right from the factory. Are you going to mount a small mirror on the inside, go with a camera, or just leave it how it is? Just wondering.

As for safety... I agree, but I don't see this as a safety issue. My interior convex mirror is coordinated with the windshield mounted mirror: before any object in the center mirror disappear, it appears in the convex mirror (even motorcycles). I have no blind spot. And I can always look to the right, which I also do (out of habit). |

Gorgeous execution and the abundance of pictures is helpful to others. CarloSW2 |
Looks very professional.

Hiyah Jean-Seb,
I just noticed in post #9 you replaced the stock mirror and that you are considering some ABAB testing soon. I'd love to see you do the testing. You'll need a good sensitive design for the test, as the benefit always seems significant but small if it materializes. Did you put the mirror back due to concern about visibility? There is an adjustment, but if you get a good sized convex mirror, place it carefully--as I know you will given the expertise of this little mod--and then angle it so the image overlaps with your center mirror you will not lose visibility of traveling objects on your right, though when you see them through which mirror will change. No matter whether you keep the delete or not, this build and and test you design well, whether it shows a benefit or none, will be useful to the forum community without a doubt. Regards, james |

An important point before anyone embarks on this sort of project. |
Wow, that turned out really well. Good job.

The mirror savings, according to Hucho, is about .01 for both mirrors. I think someone got a decimal point in the wrong place ;)
