Photoshop an "AeroSmart," win a Smart ForTwo model... and now maybe cash (Jan6/2010)

So, here's the thing: take the above image and photoshop a full aero treatment onto it. The smart is a neat car with a tiny engine, but bad aerodynamics.

Make sure to make it look like the smart, with the colours and good lines and stuff.

Best photoshop wins a cute 1:87 scale model in one of two colours (I'll post pictures of them soon).

Good luck!

ratherbehiking 05-08-2009 11:11 PM

sounds fun ill give it a whirl sometime tonight.

SVOboy 05-08-2009 11:37 PM

Looking forward to seeing it!

Ok, here's my bid for that model. The usual bells and whistles.
  • Kammback
  • Moon disks
  • Rear wheel covers
  • Wheel Deflectors
  • Antenna delete
Should be good for a few MPG's.

Fastplastic does not have a good eye for detail :) look at the reflection the smart car makes on the ground, it still has the old rims on :)

I challenge you to do better :p

For those of you that don't have Photoshop. There is a free alternative to it with just as much power called GIMP. You can find it here: The GNU Image Manipulation Program. That's what I use.

tasdrouille 05-09-2009 03:20 PM

I use GIMP, but as powerful a tool as it is, I still suck at image editing. Someone should try to chop top it, taper the roof down at the proper angle (~15 degrees) and slant its nose a bit.

Thats what I did on my one I did in paint

SVOboy 05-09-2009 03:24 PM

Keep up the good work! And yeah, GIMP is great.

I think that a blunt curved nose would be better, because this doesn't "force" a stagnation point -- it will just flow in the most natural direction. Also, the angle up on the underside of the boat tail looks a little too steep.

I don't think that lowering it helps the Cd -- if it gets too close to the ground (less than ~6") it increases drag substantially. All the super mileage (solar) cars have very tall (and skinny) wheels. The only thing lowering does is make a very small reduction in frontal area.

Grill blocks and surfaces that deflect the air to the sides are pretty hard to show in profile... It might help to include a reshaped trailing side of the front wheel openings, like what the original Insight has? Also, side exhaust vent for the engine cooling (like what the Maybach does) would help address some of the internal air flow.

If you could tell me how to put pictures in my comment and not just a thumb nail that would be great because I do not know how and didn't want to ask and sound stupid.

We have someone that already posted a nice image of a 'smart' with a boattail.
I'll see what I can come up with, but I'm giving the credit to the original poster.

Can I section the car ? It looks cartoonish stock.

I'm in!

I could think of NOTHING more important to do than photoshopping an aero smart !

Of course it will be better with the aero-cargo carrier/semi boat tail like the one someone made in the Toyota iQ thread

I vote for Metros idea.
. These cars really start to look like one of those Tango cars.

Cd 05-09-2009 11:04 PM

This is how the car could look with MAJOR surgery. It would be really impractical since only short people could ride in it ( major chopping and sectioning, not to mention reshaping the entire greenhouse.)

This is a more realistic example.

Yup, I basjoosed it :)

The overall shape isn't too bad, just needs a few tweaks. But I didn't want to be ambiguous about the source of the inspiration (and it was late).

I know this looks a lot like a few of the others but i'm just showing that I am not as bad at photo editing as you may have thought from looking at that picture I did in paint :)http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...4&d=1241974857

Well thanks :) I think others had the same idea though after looking around:
The Ultimate DIY Aero Mod - Smart Car of America Forums

Funny thing is they reference a post by ebacherville, but I cannot see his rendition of a boat tailed smart (he has server issues I think)

botsapper 05-11-2009 04:03 PM

Fun entry for discussion purposes.

A tricycle configuration
Flat trailing boattail
Top-hinged full front wheel covers
Antenna deletion/fin replacement
Wiper deletion/hydrophobic glass treatment
Rear light assembly reconfiguration
Motorcycle wheel/tire combination replacements
Side mirrors deletion
Rear/side camera viewers
Door handles shaved
Sealed front treatment (not visible)
Sealed underside conforming to tapering rear boattail

Hope it is still in the spirit of the fun discussion.

Daox 05-11-2009 04:34 PM

Agreed, very nice.

Cd 05-11-2009 05:18 PM

That's fantastic !
Well done botsapper.
