Picked up new Prius c today.

It's a Black Sand Pearl level 3. Took a forty mile drive of mixed urban, suburban and freeway this evening. Averaged 56.1 mpg for the trip per the display. Promising.

Cool beans! I with they'd made the C from the start.

NeilBlanchard 04-29-2012 08:26 AM

Cool! It will be good to see how accurate the factory MPG gauge is. What are you thinking about for your first aero mod? ;)

graesack 04-29-2012 09:22 AM

I just got my ScanGauge II back from being upgraded, so I'll be mounting it. I have some Moon spun aluminum discs coming. First true mod will probably be a lower grille block. I'm looking forward to some lowering spring options. I haven't driven a stock height vehicle in about fifty years. Who knows, I've got a few ideas I'll share as they come on line.

All the best,

sendler 04-29-2012 09:27 AM

What was the price for the level 3? 56 mpg is an excellent first tank. It might get even better now that the engine is broken in.

graesack 04-29-2012 12:39 PM

$21,800 + tax and license. Just topped off tank (didn't know dealer "fill" level.) Tires at 40F/38R. Add SG today.

todayican 04-29-2012 01:51 PM

I have about 6000 miles on mine, its un modded (for now) ;-)
Had a tank that indicated 61.2 (actual was 57.8)
Just did a tank that indicated 62.8 (actual was 60.1)

graesack 04-29-2012 05:51 PM

Lower grille block and SG in today.

All the best.

A.J. 04-29-2012 06:38 PM

Congrats on your new toy!
I'd buy one in an heartbeat if I had the money.

Daox 04-29-2012 06:55 PM

It would be great if you guys could make fuel logs in the garage so everyone can see how good these new cars are.

graesack 04-29-2012 10:08 PM

Daox, done. 60.2mpg over same trip today. I realize the display is likely optomistic, but on the same trip I can generalize.

All the best.

NeilBlanchard 04-29-2012 10:17 PM

By the way, the general consensus is that an upper grill block is the place to start, and then add a partial lower gill block if possible.

graesack 04-30-2012 09:56 AM

Neil, I understand from diagrams that the converter cooler on the Pc is at the top of the radiator. Others, it's at the bottom. I didn't want to cut air flow to it.

All the best,
Graeme

tjts1 04-30-2012 01:07 PM

60mpg real world is impressive to say the least. Can somebody please take a pic of the trunk with the foam blocks and spare tire removed? I'm curious to see how much trunk space it has without the dead weight.
thanks

I have had the lower grill entirely blocked on my 04 for a couple years now. I haven't had any issues and I have a PHEV kit so I use the electric motors a lot more than the normal Prius driver. I wouldn't worry about cutting airflow to it.

graesack 04-30-2012 03:03 PM

Daox, good to know. I'm a little gun shy with a two-day old car.

All the best,
Graeme

It's better to establish a "no mod" baseline anyway. If I were you all my mods would be reversible until the warranty ran out.

where are you ordering this stuff from?

also, what speed transmission is this thing?

thanks

Daox 05-03-2012 02:02 PM

All hybrid synergy drive vehicles (ford and toyota) have CVT type transmissions that are nothing like conventional CVT transmissions. Its basically a planetary gearbox with two electric motors and the engine all on different inputs.

graesack 05-03-2012 03:09 PM

Grille block is just 1/2" foam pipe insulation wedged in the grille opening. Slits cut in back of foam to clear vertical portions of the grille. ScanGauge I've had for years. I just got it back from being updated.

As answered previously, the transmission is a planetary CVT.

All the best.

Modellista, Toyota's in-house tuner division, has already prepared an aero-package for the Toyota Aqua (Prius C). The rear spoiler looks proper and the front, side skirts, & rear kit lowers the visual stance. 2012 Toyota Prius C Modellista by Toyota Motor Company | Tuning Cars Photos

todayican 05-08-2012 02:16 PM

If that's Toyota's idea of Aero, me thinks the market is WIDE open ;-)

botsapper 05-08-2012 02:34 PM

Without tunnel results, more of a marketing term than anything.

graesack 05-08-2012 03:07 PM

For that matter, most "aero" isn't.

graesack 05-09-2012 04:29 PM

It's not just Toyota. All car manufacturers have winners and losers in the appearance category. My point was that most body kits are probably losers in either downforce or efficiency measurements.

SwamiSalami 05-10-2012 04:48 PM

yea, i dig this kit, but it's not all that it could be.

my opinion? this is a place to begin, but not the end all, be all.

this is more fearful than anything. they're afraid to make something that will actually deliver, because it may look strange to the general public's conventional understandings of what a car "should" look like.

also, how much does it actually improve cd and mpgs? i'm willing to bet not much at all!

the article discusses the car's other employed technologies as a means of boosting efficiency, which is cool, but c'mon.

Curtis in Texas 05-14-2012 09:09 AM

Subscribed!
My next car will be a Hybrid Toyota probably the "C".
I've heard rumors that they were considering the Yaris for the Prius drive train but went with the "C" instead. Darn!

I'm still driving my 89 Isuzu FWD TD I Mark, but it's getting long in the tooth now.

Please to update your mileage and issues as they pop up. I am close to pulling the trigger on one. But, since I'm retired now I need to watch my budget close.

All the best.
Curtis

graesack 05-14-2012 03:44 PM

No issues so far. 600 miles on car. Maybe a fill up end of the week. So far, I'm averaging 50.5mpg via the display. It matched my calculated mpg pretty closely when I filled up a week ago.

Hungrily waiting for sport springs.

All the best.

Can't really tell too much from one pic.. IMHO, there's not a lot of extra room down there..

But, if you could design a 144v pack that was the exact shape of the spare tire.?. :p

Nevyn 06-05-2012 01:08 PM

That shouldn't be too hard to do. Use those thin foil-pack Li-Po cells, and connect them in a toroid shape with the contacts toward the center. Take positive out the top, and negative out the bottom. Ding! Winner.

I think that's a great idea because there are a lot of cars with "donut wheel" cavities just waiting to be re-purposed.

Ha ha, put the batteries on a powered lazy susan and spin them to cool them off, :p .

Actually stopped by the Dealership today and decide to test drive one later this evening.
Even got the MIL to look at it and she may be getting one. It would be a perfect car for her since she lives in a small golfing community and doesn't drive long trips. Grocery store and Church are her big trips. She could get a lot of mileage out of one.

Me, I want one to go into town in to visit the Grandchildren. About 20 miles to the city then 10 miles of city traffic to their houses. Then the short trips for shopping while in the big city.

My Diesel I Mark is getting tired. Kinda ready for some new car smell.

New car smell is toxic, study says.

Xringer 08-03-2012 09:19 PM

Those short city trips are what the C was made for..
It's a really fun car to drive and the mileage is great.
If you just drive it and don't try to hypermile, you will still get good MPGs.
If you aren't a lead-foot, you will always do better than the EPA numbers.

We are loving our C2. :)
And now that gas prices are shooting back up, we really like going to the gas station, once a month!

I just bought a Prius C II a month ago. Do you have photos of your mods?
I need to do more research on all this...

SwamiSalami 08-07-2012 06:49 PM

I, too, would like to see photos.
