Teach your children to drive stick, properly.

Another Florida story...a woman just bought a brand new Infiniti Q60 sports coupe with a manual gearbox, and stalled it at the wrong place at the wrong time.

i taught my wife to drive stick.
its great. she now drives like me. good on the clutch.

but seriously. when in emergency. rev the snot out of it and drop the clutch. you may spin tires, but trains wont hit u.

Just taught my 16 yr old son to drive. He practiced and got his license with my wife's auto CX9. His first car, he bought a 5-speed Honda Accord and picked up smooth shifting very quickly. Playstation/Xbox driving sims really works with this gen.

When my son was learning one of the things I made him practice was hill starts and how to maintain position on a hill using the clutch. Also how to cheat using the hand brake. Being in South Florida the only hill without traffic was a loading ram.

That is probably the most important lesson; knowing how to manage a start at an inclined/downhill stop sign/stop light. Use the hand brake start, brake cheaper than riding the clutch. Still scares me when the car rolls backwards, especially when a car/truck is behind. His car has a difficult pedal placement for a contortionist heel-toe start.

When we first got my wife's Fiesta I pulled up to a stop sign at the top of a hill. Guess what no roll back when I take my foot off the brake. Just as my mind is going through what could be wrong it rolls back. Took a couple of time before I figured out it has roll back lock.

I learned to drive stick in a 66 Catalina with a three on the tree. One of the places I routinely traveled had a stop at the top of this rather large hill. It was so bad people avoided it in winter. That is were I learned hill hold and there was no coaching involved and no hand brake.

There was a news story here a few months ago about a lady that almost got car jacked. The guy got in her car at a stoplight. She got out and ran. He tried to take the car but kept stalling it (he didn't know how to drive a stick). A near by witness let her use a cell phone to call police. They guy was caught on foot.

And I am pretty ticked off they switched their name scheme. I liked that the G37 was a 3.7. The Q60 is a 3.7. I've lost respect for them, as I did when BMW made their change.

The real trick is using all 3 petals at the same time vs the 2 and hand brake.

My sidekick has the clutch switch bypass so I can start it in gear to climb out of a sticky situation.
