Plug in Honda insight (2001).

This guy.. Would buy this 10/10 if I had the money.

!(80 mpg) modified Hybrid 2001 Honda Insight like (civic prius 2006

He is located in las vegas.

ecomodded 06-11-2014 03:03 AM

His mpg reads 58.2mpg

He seems to exaggerate some numbers and Prices, Just like most talented Salesmen would.
I suspect he could be beat down $1000 or more.

Oh I wouldn't buy it for the price he is asking. But I don't even have the money if I could beat him down 2k.

The new paint drops the value as well, unless there are some before photos showing a lack of body damage.

I would offer him 3k, personally. Lol.

The battery reads full. Must be using a grid charger and suggests use daily. Good way to ruin a battery over time.

vskid3 06-12-2014 12:13 AM

Grid charger doesn't make it a plug in. Also, newly replaced battery in 2010? That amount of time makes it a battery that could die at any time. It could do great for several more years, but like Cobb said, if he's been grid charging it daily, the battery will be sad.

California98Civic 06-12-2014 01:33 AM

Why do you think his plug-in mod will ruin the battery? Voltage differences?

Baltothewolf 06-12-2014 02:40 AM

You know guys, while we are on the subject of Honda insights, is the manual version of it just a regular manual tranny? Is there anything special about the insight manual tranny from normal ones?

RedDevil 06-12-2014 03:54 AM

It is a proper manual, low gear grind and all.
Guess you know and have visited InsightCentral.net? You can find anything you need to know about those cars there.

The battery normally maxes out at 80% SOC (full bars=80%). This is to extend battery life, other hybrids do the same thing. Grid charging is generally done to balance the pack by charging it to 100% and letting all cells reach full charge, which is fine if done every few weeks to few months depending on how healthy the battery is. Unless he has the voltage of the charger lowered to keep it from reaching full charge, he could be easily hitting 100% charging it overnight if the battery is already decently charged. The battery doesn't even hold much energy, the risk of battery damage far outweighs the potential for increased mileage.

The electric motor is before the tranny, so there isn't any hybrid magic going on in there.

Cobb 06-12-2014 07:59 PM

Batteries are designed for x amount of cycles to x amount of discharge. Most hybrids only cycle the battery a fraction of its rated capacity. When you grid charge it you do 100%. You take a lead acid deep cycle battery 100% dod daily it will last a few weeks tops.

I remember a Toyota spokesman saying that modifying a Prius to function as electric-only would damage the battery pack because it was not designed for it.

Don't Ecomodders who bypass or disable the alternator replace the battery with a deep-cycle marine cell?

Cobb 06-12-2014 09:40 PM

Yeah, the toy doesnt use as much of the capacity of the hybrid battery as the honda does. This is why you see soo many Insights and Civics with failed batteries and IMA lights, but prius keep on ticking.
