Plug in insurance monitors

I am nearly done the assessment period with an OBDII GPS plug in from the insurance company. It is looking for hard braking, hard acceleration and driving between midnight and 4am.

Has anyone else had any experience with these?

I've noticed an small improvement in my MPG because I'm accelerating better and being more mindful of my speed.

Just curious of other people's thoughts, experiences, etc...

Frank Lee 06-09-2015 06:25 PM

Has something changed?

dirtydave 06-09-2015 10:49 PM

just need a splitter so you can still use a gauge

dirtydave 06-09-2015 10:55 PM

but why the penalty for the night crew?

almost no one is on the road at 1am

Apparently, rush hour, 3-6pm, is among the most likely times for accidents, so yeah, why just pick on the night shift? But then there is this, apparentky from AAA: "31% of fatal drunk-driving accidents occur on the weekend, and the highest number of drunk drivers is on the road between midnight and 3 a.m. Fatal crashes are also four times higher at night than during the day."

Personally as someone who always attains MPG combined of 110% more than the vehicles EPA highway rating, I've find it a little annoying that a little recorder is going to suggest it can improve my driving skills. It reminds me of when the Toyota Prius and Civic Hybrids first hit the road with the graphical display of preferred driving behavior.

Those annoying little "So-in-So" trying to obtain the optimal MPG display so they could post it to the web. Gladden my heart when the CHP started cracking down on those social climbing "eco-want to-be" fools.

These insurance recorders are just another socially conscious marketing campaign. Am I cynical? Perhaps but insurance rates are what they are. Its always been about supply/demand and profitability.

I know..... lets tax people based on miles driven per year because improved mpg has left state highway repair funds depleted . That will encourage us to drive more responsibly.........Not!

damn son where is the fuel log ?!?!

ShaneRoss37 06-10-2015 09:24 AM

My insurance company never made claims that it would increase your MPG, that was just something my wife and I had noticed since installing them.

Has anyone on here received a substantial discount by using these???

I really really hope you're joking.

I deliver those little boxes to my customers as a mailman. I always tell them that I have been driving like a maniac all day to start them off right. I wonder how any call their agent wanting to reset them not knowing how they work?

Nope no thanks they would cancel my policy.
I buy H speed rated tires or higher for a reason.

Back in 08' and 09' Toyota was pushing sales of the Prius over its smaller less expensive "cousin" the Yaris. As a result I really suspected the 29MPG city 36MPG highway was "contrived a bit" by Toyota to sell the more expensive and heavier Prius. Yes the Prius gets better MPG until you actually load in to full weight rating.

Anyway I was so sure I was right in 09' that I bought one, the 5spd hatchback. In the words of Gomer Pyle "sha-zam!" that little car never gets under 40 MPG. Surprise! Surprise! Even at 108,000 miles. For full disclosure: tire are aired up to 41lbs, not 32 has the door sticker requires.

Plus I did upgrade the lackluster suspension from stock to coil over D2 Racing suspension for drive ability. I was up to 43.7 MPG until I raise the suspension close to stock Height a few months back, but still managed to hold unto 40 to 41 MPG.

My goal remains the same 50 mpg, without home built aero mods. This is still my daily driver, so no surprises by less than fully engineered and tested updates.

I guess you missed the news story a few months back. Oregon and a couple of other states have the open discussions in their legislative agenda for the 2015 thru 2016 sessions. I'll see If I can find a story link later

I'm plugging in my "little black box" tomorrow for the next 90 days. I tried this once before with a splitter so I could still use the ScanGauge, but it didn't work too well. So this time I will be without the ScanGauge for 90days... :( Hopefully, not knowing how well I'm driving will not have a significant effect on my mpg.

Fat Charlie 06-10-2015 04:26 PM

I can't see Big Brother's "deal" being worth more than 90 days of good instrumentation- especially since it would probably mean 90 days without EOC as well. :(

As I said earlier my wife and I both have them on our cars and are nearly done the assessment period of 180 days. We are both very conservative drivers with our daily drivers. We have another car for speeding and general screwing around. I plugged mine in two weeks before her so I'll be done first at the end of July.

We can log into a website to view our 'stats' so far and weekly 'discount updates' ... so far we are both enroute to a 25% discount. Which is a Sh!t ton of money (I think). Especially for not doing anything. I am just nervous that on the final day of the assessment we will be told that there was a problem with their system or some crap and get a considerably lower discount. Just wondering what the highest discount was that anyone had personally experienced (not a friend of a friend).
