Poll: MPG before and after hypermiling

I would like to conduct a an informal poll to see the MPG benefits people are obtaining from hypermiling.

I'd like to try to limit this as much as possible to gains obtained exclusively through driver technique. I believe most hypermilers will utilize other basic techniques when they start hypermiling, including but not limited to increasing tire pressure, reducing unneeded weight, performing scheduled maintenance, etc. The only thing I wish to specifically exclude are physical mods, such as aerodynamic or engine mods. Additional guages (scanguage, vacuum pressure, etc) are, allowed.

Please list the following information. (feel free to cut and paste)

MPG currently achieved: 33-34

Specifics

Location of primary driving (country/state): Arizona
Miles driven per year: 36,000 last year, 20-30% city, the res freeway

List all tools/techniques used to achieve current MPG:
  • Accelerate like a scooter pulling a cattle trailer
  • SLOW DOWN! Used to drive 80-85 mph on freeway, now I keep it 65-70, unless running late.
  • Don't drive into the Mexico plant, park at the border and catch a ride. Saves from idling in the slow moving line for anywhere from 15 minutes to well over an hour.
  • Coast to red lights. Always done it, just try and do it better now
  • "Draft", not close, but if I come up on a tractor trailer doing a few mph slower than myself I'll just follow along instead of passing. This probably makes the biggest difference so far.

I ordered a ScanGauge II on Sunday, we'll see what I learn from playing with that. I'm pretty happy to be able to pull 30+ mpg from a decent sized car with a V6 and slushbox tranny. The whole hypermiling thing is fun in a sense of seeing how good you can do, but it's kind of tough for me. Work pays the gas for my traveling, so driving slow and saving gas costs me time and doesn't save me money, although I get some satisfaction from being less wasteful.

One negative is that I'm currently wearing out a set of snow tires.

With all the hills around here, where I'm driving makes a big difference. I basically use my car to drive to work, to a farm to pick up milk once a week, and to the dump on weekends. Out to the farm and back I average about 58mpg, commuting was 48 there and 51 back (my company moved to a new location last week and I haven't yet done a "normal" commute to the new location), and somewhat lower going out to the dump (around 45, I think).

I've used the SGII to determine that I can shift into 5th at 25mph, and that I do the best between 35 and 45mph, so I try to stay in that range when I can.

NeilBlanchard 07-29-2008 11:17 PM

Hi,

Before, 37mpg+ average (over three years, winter and summer)

Now, my 90 day average is 44mpg+.

Before, my high was 41.8mpg and now it is 47.7mpg.

About a 6-7mpg spread for each.

Oh, before I started ecodriving, the most miles on a tank was 427.1.

Now 509.3 miles -- an increase of 84.9 miles!

Engine Size: 1.5L 4 Cylinder
Transmission: 5 speed Manual

MPG Info (averages only):

MPG before hypermiling: 35 MPG
MPG currently achieved: 42 MPG

Specifics:

Location of primary driving (country/state): India/Uttar Pradesh/Noida,
Miles driven per year: Roughly 10,000
List all tools/techniques used to achieve current MPG:
1. Pump up tires to 50 PSI
2. Remove all removable weight from the boot, including spare tire
3. Use ICE-OFF coasting whenever I can, including city driving conditions (actually not very difficult doing this in city, as speeding opportunities are less anyways, so coast peacefully :p )
4. Anticipate traffic and modified driving to avoid momentum loss by braking
5. Accelerate like a Great-Granny (Was Granny-like in using throttle earlier too, but now it is worse ;-)
6. Never exceed 2k rpm
7. Used bump-starting >90% of starts from ICE-OFF coasting using that great technique posted by MetroMPG - feather touch in 5th to get the ICE going, then speed match and put in gear needed.

I started with a good 50/50 mix of city/highway to work... was getting a range of 30-32MPG (not driving ecofriendly on the highway)

started new job, all city and a "shorter" drive... FE started to drop down to about 25ish as the car doesn't reach operating temp for a good portion of the drive :( and that is with #200 worth of tools in the trunk and mostly "hill climbing" to and from work.

Hypermiling I've pushed my FE back to 28mpg and I think I have pushed it yet again to over 30... waiting on my next fill up, but my fuel gauge is showing more in the tank than I had last month with the same number of miles (hopefully that doesn't mean my gauge has stopped working right LOL)

Car needs a lot of fine tuning awaits to get the MPGs up for city driving, but hypermiling definately is helping :)
