i like the concept, but how well would this really help, and how the heck would you set it?

It sounds like a good device to provide general feedback on how efficiently you are operating your engine. Allows those of us less versed in driving efficiently to do better than normal. It will not help hard-core hypermilers, but it helps in the same way a Scangauge helps.

Presumably the inputs would be documented, then it's up to you how to modify your accelerator and MAP signals to fit the input ranges required. Most sensors are fairly standard, so all you may have to do is splice into the ECU harness and run wires to it.

My problem with this is that is I love numbers (not for math :confused:, just information). It is the fact that automakers began putting lights instead of gauges into vehicles that people now have a minimal understanding of the functioning of their engine, hence the term "dummy light". As a pilot, I enjoy having some form of readout to tell me how every aspect of a vehicle is functioning, no matter how cluttered the instrument panel is. Scangauge fits this purpose quite nicely. Observing the RPM over the MAP gauge, with the MPG and AVG gauges on the other side are quite effective at providing the feedback that I need to keep my engine in it's most efficient range. The only drawback with SG is the slight delay between readings, analog gauges provide much better resolution for engine monitoring.

so In my 90 Cr-x with a D15z1 and a HF tranny rolling on 190/50-15 tires, driving on the freeway when going 70mph I have 2 options:

4th gear @ 2400 rpm's (throttle just barely pressed)

or

5th gear @2000 rpm's (throttle 3/4 of the way open)



This artical is saying that 5th will do better for FE is this correct? I really feel like it bogs down alot and waists gas when in 5th at 3/4 throttle...

No question - 5th gear and lower rpm.

I would love to roll 70 mph at 2000 rpm. My aggravating gear ratios put me at 2000 rpm down at 50 and screaming 3000 at 70.

i just wish i could get my o2 sensor going and get into lean burn! or even to be able to go into vtec-e when getting on the freeway!

If your engine computer is set up so that it goes into Wide-Open Throttle open loop at 3/4 throttle, then... you'll see more gas being used. My engine computer does this... stupid engine computer.

My Honda doesn't go Open Loop until 95% throttle. That's pedal-to-the-floor. If you're there, go ahead and downshift because you actually need the power.
