Good Deal?

Me again with threads about cars that I think about buying but never do. If this clutters up the forums then lemme know and I’ll delete it.

I’ve found this car near (enough) to me and I was wanting your guys’ thoughts. He’s moving at the end of July and so he wants the car gone before then. On that note, he told me he can give me it for $1800 CAD versus the list price of $2500. He seems to be on top of all the maintenance and the car itself looks quite clean. Only kicker is the odometer, which reads around 440,000 km. Seems concerning, but I’ve seen quite a bit of these cars being sold with the same or close the same kms on them.

For reference, I paid $1600 for my Civic, which has around 250,000km or so. I paid for that in early fall of 2020. I’ve noticed TDI golfs such as this have been consistently at $3500-4000 so this seems pretty good.

Looks pretty clean from the outside, given the price, age, and where in the world it lives. What is the evidence that he has been on top of maintenance? Carfax type report, receipts, or his word?

Currently just word of mouth. I’ve asked him for a VIN so I can file a carfax report. He’s told me that he’s kept on top of underbody coating, oil changes, timing belt replacements, and a few other things. Clean indeed on the outside; only a few rust spots on the one fender.

I seen a much rougher-looking golf with 400,000km for $3500, so this does seem like a steal. Have to see what Carfax comes up with.

Edit: Tried to cheat Carfax as they charge like $40.00 minimum for a report, but I ended up getting what I paid for. Anyways, the reports aren’t too detailed but show no issues, which looks to be quite good.
