Will they be fed on Soylent Green?

Strangely, I don't fear it.

I recently learned that frozen embryos have no known shelf life. Seems to me if humanity ever leaves this solar system, it will require embryos and artificial parents (not to mention an artificial womb).

We already have in vitro fertilization. Genetic selection already exists, to an extent. Genetic engineering is coming soon. My children will likely be the last "natural" generation.

That's not to say that there's no problems. The biggest problems we will (now) face concern ethical use of these technologies. It will make global warming seem like a silly joke as far as problems go.

Thanx for not referencing The Matrix.

IIRC it was backstory in E. M. Forester's 1909 short story The_Machine_Stops.

In 2021, Wired magazine's Randy Alfred wrote, "__1909: __ E.M. Some aspects of the story no longer seem so distant in the future." Alfred went on to note that a lecturer in the story provides, "a chilling premonition of the George W. Bush administration's derogation of 'the reality-based community'".[4]

I've been waiting 2 decades for replacement teeth grown in a vat. Now I [would consider] an mRNA shot to grow a whole new set of teeth.

You'd probably enjoy "I Am Mother". Not as action packed as Alita, but it makes up for it in suspense.

I used to believe someone would propose replacing humans with robots, instead of ever daydreaming about artificial wombs.

They Machine Stops was in 1909. In 1921 we got R. U. R. (Rossom's Universal Robots)

R.U.R.: Rossum's Universal Robots by Karel Čapek | Goodreads
Written in 1920, R.U.R. premiered in Prague in 1921, and was first performed in New York in 1922, garnering worldwide acclaim for its author and popularizing the word "robot". Mass-produced as efficient laborers to serve humans, Capek's Robots are an android product. They remember everything but think of nothing new.

Artificial womb is part of the progression. Womb is fundamental, but the short 2nd is mom and dad. Once that can be replicated artificially in a useful way, things get very interesting.

Embryos have no known expiration date, meaning the time it takes to traverse the galaxy becomes somewhat trivial.

I say again, freebeard needs to see I Am Mother.

Piotrsko 01-03-2023 11:11 AM

Embryos haven't expired in the time we have been storing them, under a hundred years.

Star travel at sublight take more time than that.
