Putting hybrid style starter/alt on other car?

Has anyone looked into whats involved in swapping one of those heavy duty starter/alternator units onto an existing car, so that you could stop it at every stoplight, then restart it in 1/2 second as a form of 'mild hybrid'? Either alongside the existing starter (maybe belt drive) or replacing it entirely...

Normal starters will burn out subjected to such abuse, but it seems like a nice compliment for around town mileage to other systems.

Starters are far more reliable than they used to be.

I'm only aware of one "hard core" hypermiler who has had to change a conventional starter motor as a result (probably) of much higher than normal usage.

But does he stop it at every intersection and restart it? :P Even if it's less a durability issue, I drove a Saturn Vue greenline and liked how quickly and quietly it whipped the engine back on once I took my foot off the brake... grinding my otherwise older but efficient car for 12 seconds at every light i'd rather avoid. I'd like to swap that onto something if I could. Plus it's potentially a 13hp hybrid power boost under full throttle, which could matter for seriously underpowered and overgeared engines, especially the way electric motors have more torque at slow speeds.

My 2010 Ford Ranger typically starts within a second or two of turning on the ignition when the light changes. I'm usually moving well before the people around me who are typically not paying attention to the lights because of cellphones, conversations with passengers, etc.
