Faster than their tires can safely handle

"A premature tire failure may occur on the front or steer axle" and could cause a crash, Peterbilt said in documents posted this week by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Dealers will reprogram the trucks' computers so they can't go faster than 65 mph.

Peterbilt recalls over 2,000 semis that can go faster than their tires can safely handle -- PCH Frontpage

Can you imagine if when getting a new set of tire the car had to be programmed for the tire speed rating if vehicle could exceed it.

I would not expect Peterbilts would come equipped with sub-standard tires. It's the trailers that get the retreads.

When I was a truck mechanic we put retreads on every axle except the front.

Less redundancy on the front axle. I saw a truck pulled over at a truck scale today with the Les Schwab (tire service) people swarming the front.
