Question about fitting clearance

I had some gas stolen a while back from my pickup and they sliced open the rubber fuel line leading to the fuel tank pretty good. Since I have smog coming up, replacement needs to happen soon, however new rubber pipe is crazy expensive at $40 for the two feet I need. I figured it would be a lot more cost effective to put a metal pipe in there. I just crawled around under there and the spout looks like it's made from 1.5" tube since it looks like it has a 1.9" OD, but it also has a ridge pressed in that's probably close to the 2" ID of the rubber line, so I need something thin enough to press a bead into. Are galvanized steel and Aluminum tubing o.k. for use w/ gas?

I don't think galvanized is, but aluminum works fine. (aluminum engine blocks, etc... )

I don't think the stuff is water-tight, but would a flexi-pipe exhaust pipe work for what you need?

Many old outboards had alum gas tanks.

Galvanized was OEM on lotsa stuff so I'd roll it.

I could do flex pipe if it could hold pressure, but it's a bit expensive. I think I'll go w/ the Al if the hardware store has it for a decent price since it's probably easier to make a bead, and if not the galvanized steel, since it should only be about $10 or so and provide protection against anyone w/ a pocket knife. Thanks you two!

Although it would probably not be cheaper, how about checking into some of the stainless braided hose that racers use. That should frustrate the next idiot who trys to steal your gas:thumbup:
