Questions for new Outback Owners
 

I am going to be getting rid of my SUV & am trying to figure out what to get. I am considering a new generation Outback, but have a few questions.

The CVT is rated at better mileage both City & Highway than the manual. Does the CVT allow you to Engine Off Coast? If moderately hypermiled what milage are you getting out of the different transmissions.

I have heard the transmission ratios in the manual are a little tall. What are the ratios like in the CVT. I go camping with my son's Scout troop quite often. We end up in some particularly hilly spots (for OH & PA anyway) & may occasionally pull a small trailer loaded with gear.

How hard is it to find a decent All Terrain tire or Off Road tires?

Don't own a new one, but have an old one and put in my share at SubaruOutback.org

The CVT or any Subaru Auto can't be engine off coasted. The center differential (clutch pack) relies on it running to keep it cool, and it will burn up in a very short time (My AT Warning light comes on after only a few feet.)

As far as tires, honestly you'll be fine with the stock tires as long as it's not 2 feet of snow on top of 3 feet of mud. My LRR tires have gotten me in plenty silly places.
