However, the more disruption in wake airflow allows the following car to close any gap between the cars on the straightaways where DF added traction serves little purpose and allows for reduced drag for the following car resulting often in a slingshot pass in the braking zone.

Good point. I also see a lot of plumbing to that wing - there is probably a whole story in there.
While I'm here, though, I'll point out that the plumbing is just round tubing, and that race car builders seem quite oblivious to the drag caused by rollover bars and other tubing. It is dead simple to reduce the drag of a tube by half, and a factor of ten is not out of reach.

The haphazardly? run round underwing coolant tubing detail seen is a problem for me. In typical modern race car rear wing set-ups today at the higher levels, the wing supports are attached on top of the wing (Swan style). The reason being it was found in wind tunnel testing clean airflow of the bottom gave better results when the supports attached to the top. I deduce that the coolant tubes routing seen really disturbs underwing airflow and truly sabotages the wing's main purpose of creating DF. Of course, at that time this discovery had yet to be made I suspect. Just another of the shortcomings of the project it seems.

I found this doing a Google image search.
NAME: 1970 AVS Shadow MK1

Quote:
MK1 Lowline
there was originally active aero flaps that would deploy during braking, but these would be scrapped as regulations in Can-Am would outlaw this
issues would come up with cooling, so cooling fans from the Chevrolet Corvair were shoved onto the front wheels (which would be one of the first cars to sport a “superfan” rim), and radiators would be shoved on the spoiler, giving the car a very odd look
when the spoiler was added, the longtail bodywork was ditched, leaving a radically different car to the original design
the spoiler would quickly get redesigned, along with the bodywork at the rear to account for cooling
the Shadow MK1 would get plagued with lots of issues, which sadly meant it would not see very much success, but it would become a popular car from the radical design it had.............

Tilley was lucky enough to pilot not only the Shadow MKI Mosport race car on Saturday, but the MKI Prototype complete with its air-braking system on Sunday as well.

The Shadow has always been thought IMO to be a pushing the envelope racing experiment, with some rather disjointed solutions that rarely resulted in on track success. But I guess they earned an "A" for effort.

His head isn't above the turbo inlet from what I see

It is in the pic I am looking at. Besides a roll bar has a specific nearly singular purpose, so does a turbo inlet, and it's not designed to protect a driver in a rollover in anyway. It's out of focus, but the following car in the pic is a McLaren has the roll bar ABOVE the driver's helmet.
Oddly the pic of the Shadow parked on the grass at a concours show has a much taller rollbar it seems
