Your car may soon have an app for that.

OpenXC Platform

How about a shift know that lets you know when to shift?

Shift Knob - OpenXC

Anyone seen this before or writing code?

Couldn't resist pulling your chain. Personally I think cars are overly complicated now. But time marches on.

I think people are losing the ability to use their heads and just do things unassisted by electronics. That said, many could sure use the help.

Don't sms and drive, stare at your gear lever, wait for it to say "shift" or flash, and then shift. Don't bother looking at the road, that won't tell you anything.

In this case I believe that it vibrates, no need to take your eyes off the road. Its also adaptable, light gas pedal pressure and it give you shift points for economy and stand on it performance. Now I'm not a person who thinks if it didn't come on the car is isn't a good idea. I was adding interval wipers to cars that didn't come with them back in the 70's. Remember building my sister a head light reminder after she killed a battery.
Car will continue to become more electronics orientated. This just may be a way for people to customize them and I like the idea its open source. Now if only they could come up with a way to shut off my DRLs.

Computers--for those applications where humans can't make mistakes fast enough.
