Record tank, Saturn Ion
I had a record fill this morning. It was admittedly a short film but it was all highway and I always top off before starting the day... 96.9miles and 1.708 gallons is almost 57mpg! Duh, WINNING!
|
Awesome!! 119% above EPA!!
|
I’m really proud of my car lol... if I start consistently getting 55+ I guess I’m really gonna go for 60 next?
|
Congratulations!!
How are you doing it? Hypermiling via engine-off coasting; other advanced techniques? |
I keep speed to 60 wherever possible on the expressway and EOC down any hill that’s steep enough to allow me to maintain 60 or accelerate...
|
So really it gets 30 like my car if you leave it running all the time? LOL
No really, good job Bones Andy |
If i eliminated all EOC and focused on DWL, I figure it would drop to around 45mpg?
|
Nice job!
I still EOC in my Volt, there are at least a dozen places along my daily commute where I'm only using .5 kWh because it's in neutral with only the lights on and the radio blasting! It definitely makes a positive difference in your mpg (or mpge), and if done properly other drivers can't even tell you're doing it |
The only real tell that I’m coasting is that going down some of the hills I hit 75-85mph, and then only hold 60-ish (60 plus speedometer error) everywhere else...
|
Well, you're doing a good job bonestock!
My car is driven mostly in the flatlands of Louisiana, so I've got no hills to milk for extra fuel economy. With an automatic, I'd probably ruin it if I tried coasting down with the engine off anyway. As it is, my Scanguage reports I'm making 9999 mpg down the tall bridges, so I'll settle for that. For me, it's a steady 55-58 mph where I can get away with it. Where I can't because of 70-75 mph speed limits and impatient traffic, I run 68 or so and try to find a truck that's going as close to 60 mph as possible and shadow it from two or three hundred yards behind; not close enough to draft him but close enough to keep the road rage down because they can plainly see their problem is him, not me. :-) |
I SMASHED my old record!

I had to make a couple trips from Glenville to Clay and back today. Filled the car up beforehand and afterward at the same gas station in Gassaway, same pump even... I can’t see it being a filling error due to using the exact same pump, but I legitimately thought my fuel gauge was broken when I pulled in...
I triple checked the pump and the odometer reading, and did the calculations over and over again, 274.9mi (added 5% to the trip meter) and 4.133 gallons of fuel, it’s a record for certain! Temps were around 90F the whole time, the engine was kept warm for the entire tank, the terrain for the trip was mostly flat, with small rolling hills, and 90% of the trip was two lane roads, PnG between 40 and 55mph. Tires were bald and at an unknown pressure, and I think Mercury has come out of retrograde? Point is, this tank probably represents the pinnacle of what this car can do in its current form, in perfectly optimized conditions, with perfect hypermiling... Anyway, 66.5MPG! |
Awesome! Over 50 MPG for about a year now, and now absolutely crushed that 60 MPG barrier!
|
Wow, bonestock. You're getting that little Saturn to be the best it can be! Congratulations!
|
Thanks a lot guys! That record breaking tank was the cherry on top of an otherwise wonderful day yesterday!
