Rolled fender aero?
So I have found myself in need of at least one fender for my car, and I’ve been inspired by the work of OG VX, with his trailing edge rolled in for smoother air evacuation from the wheel wells... I however can’t find any info on this mod... I’m sure it’s buried in his build thread but I hadn’t found it yet... how much was gained by having the fender vented in such a manner?

I haven't seen this example but it is done routinely in racing and on very high efficiency cars. |
I remember a more subtle version done on the G1 Insight, but I had no idea if it helped much at all

Curious too to know if and what might be measurable.

Needs pix.
I know you can roll the lip out, just [repeatedly] feed an aluminum baseball bat through as the car rolls forward and back. |
My current scheme is to use a pool noodle cut in half lengthwise and fastened justvat the edge of the wheel well. It's far down on the list though.

A tight tire to wheelwell fit may just have the same impact.

Something like that would be great if I had a longer fender to roll in, but I’ve only got about 6” of fender...

Seems like a lot of work for a questionable result. But I can imagine that any rounding of that edge will help reduce wake.

If you do it, please do at least an A-B test. Probably no going back to A on this one.

BMW saw enough benefit from relieving wheel well pressure to implement a vent (same function as the rolled fender, evacuation of higher-pressure air) on the X5.

Agreed that the front tire to door hinge line is critical.
http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-fr...3-8752da9b.jpg I think this is a fiberglass Hebmuller, but you can get the same effect by grafting a Superbeetle nose onto the back. Gary Emory did it in the 90s. That would be a good picture to dig up. He did it to a 1952 with an MG-TD windshield! |
