Roof spoiler effect

Hi All,
really hope you would help me as well, as it is mainly an aerodynamic curiosity.

Toyota Celica GT-four WRC was sold from 1994 with this wing:

But in 1996 Toyota added a roof spoiler on the top of the rear window:

What kind of aero impact do you think this roof spoiler will have?

Thank you.

My guess is it enhances the flow to the trunk spoiler for more downforce.

The photos in the link below show an air slot on the roof wing/spoiler.

I have a complete explanation of how such garnishment may work in my signature, see roof wing.

I've seen similar spoilers available for my Miata and my fiance's Civic and wondered what sort of effect they would have on drag.

Yes, I too suppose it should have some effect on downforce... even if is translated from a Japanese Toyota catalog as a "rear sunvisor"...

And moreover because, as kach22i wrote, there is an air slot in the middle...

Really would like to see a picture of how the air flow would look like there... ;)

Thanks

I could draw some nice arrows if you'd like.

Really??
Can I ask if it'd be possible with and without the roof spoiler?

Thanks! :)

Like Frank Lee pointed out, I drew arrows but in my own defense the arrows follow what I understand about boundary layer airflow and mass airflow.

There are a few patents based on similar principals but that don't mean they work as theorized, only that somebody spent money on a patent.

I have been unable to find air tunnel with smoke video of similar devices. However, it has been over a year since I searched.

Go to Youtube, Google and or Bing and do a search. Please post your findings in this thread if you come up with anything Wolf_TM.

I should note that Computational Fluid Dynamic models available to us amateurs may not be sophisticated enough for something so intricate.

Yes, really think you're right...
How will be to make a video of some wool yarn?

I agree with Frank, that it it's there to modify flow to the other spoiler.Mercedes-Benz did this a couple decades ago with their 190 EVO.
On the Autobahn, this combination might make the difference between hydroplaning or not at the speeds folks can legally drive on certain sections.

Ok, perfect thanks...
so even if I don't like it, i think it's time to search for one of it... :)

Obviously, the original setup causes the car to fly.

Not everybody realizes that not only are there speed limits on portions of the autobahn, but they are slow by even U.S. standards.

Brilliant, guess I was just taking the topic too seriously and missed this.:D

RE: MB 190 EVO

The roof garnish appears to be closed at the top, no slot - reliance on a giant wing alone.

If someone can find a better angle, please post it. I'd like to be wrong on this one.
