Samurai transmission speedo drive

Hi all! New to this forum, but not to trying fuel savings from scams to things that actually work. Not scared to try new things, have flown behind a 3cyl turbo suzuki in a home built biplane. Current project is a suzuki 3cyl turbo in my 57 morris minor. Does anyone know how to get a speed reading from the Samurai transmission? Thanks. Roger

I don't have the answer, but there were 2WD Samurais.

There were 2WD Vitaras, but I'm unaware about 2WD Samurais. BTW I've already seen some Vitara and Samurai owners work around bicycle speedometers when the stock one fails instead of replacing the stock sensors.

Here in Canada we only have 4x4 sammys to my knowledge. There are 2wd trackers, but different bellhousing bolt pattern. I want the origional smiths speedometer to work, so the bike thing won't do. ??

OK, I know nothing about the Samurai speedo set-up, sorry, I'm assuming it's an electronic one.

As a variation on CR's comment about bicycle speedos, how about a British motorcycle speedo drive?

My '55 AJS uses a Smiths speedo, driven by a self-contained gear drive clamped to the rear axle. That's a pretty standard set-up for bikes of that period.

I don't know if it would be possible to adapt such a gear drive to your car, or if the ratio is suitable.

If that doesn't work, how about an electronic speedo with the Smiths dial swapped in?

Samurai speedo is mechanical cable. The problem is it runs off the back of the divorced transfer case. Therefore no drive from trans. I'm curious if the trans was used in other 2wd applications? Maybe a van or 2wd pickup? We didn't get them here, but I see a lot of them in NZ and OZ. There are several casting spots were it could go, so when I get it apart(needs bearings) I'll have a good look. Will check out the M/C tip as well. Thanks! Roger
