Scanguage NOT WORKING on VW Golf

Hello All,

I'm just curious if anybody else has come across this issue I'm currently experiencing.

I recently bought a Scanguage, but when I went to hook it up to my VW Golf MK4 1.4 Petrol , Nothing!!!! it just said "Connecting..." continously before going into sleep mode. Such bitter disapointment :( Anyway I tried forcing various Modes but to no avail. ISO seems to be the code for VW earlier than 2005.

So I decided to contact Scanguage by email. They said this There seems to be a problem with the ISO capictor which is hindering the ScanGaugeII from connecting to your vehicle. They also sent out a replacement to test the theory. I cannot fault their customer service!

Unfortunately the second unit sais "connecting" also, although Scanguage and the 2 reps I was talking to said it SHOULD work with the car. Perhaps somebody might be able to suggest something.

The car has had no modifications and still retains the original VW radio!

Anybody know if it would be worth giving Ultraguage a go even though Scanguage doesn't work on my vehicle?

Any feedback much appreciated.

If you have a code scanner, try to get codes off the ECM. If that doesn't work, maybe your OBD port has a problem.

Possibly a stoopid question, apologies if it is, but did you actually start the car ?

In my Fabia it said 'Connecting' on the running key position but never connected until I started the engine and let it idle for a while.

I would try this, I had the same issue you did until I started the car :)

Cheers Guys,

My bad, I guess it would have helped if I mentioned I started the car but only on one occasion, I'm deciding wether or not to return it at the moment:(.

I'm not gonna give up just yet ;),

Just out of interest Arragonis, how long did it take to connect with the engine running?

There seems to be no logical reason for it except something to do with the car even though its computer does work when hooked up in the garage.

Happy Hypermiling.

Give it 3-5 min. If it has not connected by then something is wrong. I think the issue is on the car end.

C4Kid 10-06-2010 03:46 PM

Yeah I left it only about 40 seconds, its worth a try at least. I'll fire it up in a while see how it goes.

Arragonis 10-06-2010 05:33 PM

It was about 2-3 min the first time. After that it connects in 10 secs. Give it a go.

Arragonis 10-06-2010 05:35 PM

PS and report back. If it works you will love it. :)

C4Kid 10-06-2010 06:24 PM

Unfortunately I've still had no luck  I've driven around with it connected as well for ages and it wouldn't connect. I might try and mess around with it tommorrow when I have more time. They really are an amazing piece of kit Everybody sais and I saw it working briefly when I used it in my friends car. I was looking at the OBD port and it seems fully functional. ah well just, just have to go back to the old way of recording litres and miles:rolleyes:

Weather Spotter 10-06-2010 06:30 PM

Does the port work at the dealership or with an auto part store's scanner?
of not then it is on your end. If it works there then call up the scangauge people And explain what is going on. If they claim the SG will work with your car they need to prove that it works.

C4Kid 10-06-2010 06:42 PM

The car worked when hooked up to a scanner at a local garage, not at a VW dealership. I never thought it would make a difference but You could be right, might be worth looking into. It's weird, I've spoken to 3 different people from Scanguage and they all say it should work with the vehicle. Very suprising it doesn't.

Weather Spotter 10-06-2010 06:47 PM

So it did not work at the dealership? Or you have not tried it there?

C4Kid 10-06-2010 06:53 PM

No, I have not tried it at the dealership.

Weather Spotter 10-06-2010 06:55 PM

I would try it there and see if it works. That will put the ball back onto scangauge's court.

C4Kid 10-06-2010 07:01 PM

Yeah it's worth a shot I'll bring it in over the next day or two, thanks very much for the advice!

Weather Spotter 10-06-2010 07:06 PM

It is worth a try. It will show that you are not making it up (l do not claim you are).
If scangauge said it should work and it will not, they should make it work.

C4Kid 10-06-2010 07:12 PM

Exactly, You are correct , if theres nothing wrong with the car, then it's false advertising essentially.

Arragonis 10-07-2010 04:39 AM

If you don't get it to work maybe try a TurboGauge which is supposed to be a knock off of a knock off of the SG2. Not cheaper now SG2s come in from Greece but maybe worth a shot.

C4Kid 10-07-2010 12:15 PM

Thanks for the suggestion, I was looking at a Turboguage they are about £100, but if it's a knockoff of the SC2 using similar software, maybe it won't work either? I was also looking at an Ultraguage because it is not linked to Scanguage at all but I'm still worried it might not work either.:(

Y'all are aware that this is an Irish car, yes? I don't know if that has any influence on the problem but it seems to me that it might.

EDIT: I think that is the problem. From the ScanGauge FAQ:

Quote:

Will the ScanGauge II work on my vehicle that was purchased outside of the US and Canada?

The ScanGauge requires the vehicle to be either OBDII or EOBD compatible. In the US and Canada, cars and light trucks were required to be OBDII compatible starting in 1996. In Europe, EOBD was phased in between 2002 and 2004. Other parts of the world have required one of them starting in various years.

Many vehicles made and/or sold outside the US and Canada had one of the protocols before they were required in that country. This was to allow sales to other countries and because they knew they would eventually be required to meet the requirements and designed it in when they redesigned a particular model.

There is no comprehensive list of when particular vehicles began using OBDII or EOBD outside the US and Canada.

C4Kid 10-07-2010 03:35 PM

I saw that before I bought mine but I also saw this, Scanguage also have a European reseller for their product. www.scanguage.net. and this is what they say about compatibility.

The Scangauge II will work on most cars and light trucks since model year 1996. There are also some 1994 and 1995 models which the ScanGauge II will work on (Ask us). There are some vehicles built after 1996 that the ScanGauge II will not work on or has some limitations in the gauges and trip information (Ask us).
My car is OBDII it would have to be with 16 pins and the connecter fits properly.

I ran my battery down last week and SCII wouldn't come on. I unplugged the cord from the back of the unit with the engine running, plugged it back in and it worked for me. Might be worth a try.

I've heard of some people disconnecting the battery to reset the ECU, maybe the same thing happened to You COcyclist when the battery died? That's definitly one thing I have not tried as of yet.
