scanguage work for nonfuctioning speedometer?
 

the civic i am driving has an issue with the speedometer not working, i noticed that the fuse was blown so i installed the appropriate fuse and it blew again, a shop told me that after inspecting the wiring they cannot determine why it keeps surging and blowing the fuse.

would a scanguage connected to the obdII bypass the fuse section and give me a readout on the speed so that i can safely asess my speed while i am driving?

anyone have any direct experience with this possibly?

I think yes, if the car is 1996 or newer. The OBD II port is reading what the ECU/PCM is reporting as MPH, and this information would be based on the same inputs.

If your were super hard-core, you could remove the console to save weight and use just the SG (not me).

thx for the reply, so you are saying the obdII output most likely bypasses the fuses and is on a different wiring output correct?

That's an odd situation.

What year is your Civic?

I'm trying to interpret from an Integra shop manual how the speedo, VSS (vehicle speed sensor), and OBD outputs relate to one another.

The VSS has several different wires to terminating points -- any of which could have a short causing the blown fuse, but it may have a direct line to the OBD connector.

If the VSS is operational, then that may be your best bet, and the SG would work.

Another question: do you have Anti-lock brakes (if so, do they work?) That may help answer the question as well.

The OBDII output should be coming straight from the car computer. Your short appears to be isolated to the speedometer in the console, so I think you're fine.

One of the OBDII connector pins is a power supply pin that the Scangauge uses for power. As long as that power is not being shorted, the Scangauge should be safe.

AS RH77 said, the year of your Civic is important to know.
