Scavenging parts from Cruze Eco

Has anybody looked at scavenging parts from the Cruze Eco for a regular Cruze? Are they bolt-on replacements?

I'd be interested in a front air dam and maybe a transmission, eventually.

Would be nice to see how the Eco transmission would perform with the non-turbo engine.

Which? M6 or A6 model transmission? Only the A6 has unique SW-programming...M6 is just (well) a manual.

Also, the radiator shutter mechanism will ONLY work with the Eco-specific ECM computer with it's specific Eco-programming.

So that's a kinda pointless move from GM. OK, the lower pick rate for manuals back there would seem to not justify, but it wouldn't be so hard to have its gearing set to enhance the efficiency.

There might have some way to work around an alternative way to control it as a stand-alone unit.

After all, it seems to be more cost-effective to do the mods independently instead of trying to follow strictly the solutions implemented in the Eco.

I think the Eco gets different wheels. Dollar for dollar the trans would probably be the best mod. I think you would be better of just getting an Eco, than tring to piece one together

Where is the fun in that?

No way man. The Eco costs thousands more than my base model, but you can buy the air dam, etc for $25. 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Parts - GM Parts Department: Buy genuine GM auto parts & aftermarket accessories at wholesale prices.

I'll have to ask the techs if the parts will fit when I'm at the dealership again.

tvbd56 08-18-2014 04:47 AM

I would assume that they would bolt-on. Is your stock grille partially blocked off like the eco?

jakobnev 08-18-2014 06:17 AM

You can make an airdam and grilleblock for a $..

Historically, no GM FWD anything is geared for performance anyway. GM's typical idea of a performance transmission is to numerically raise the differential ratio of the econobox until first gear is useless and ship it out, not to actually deliver an optimized gear set. The Cruze Eco is not one of those cars.

The 1.8L, Eco and standard turbo all have different gear sets, amazingly... the Eco automatic is also tuned differently as far as shift points etc...

First:
3.82 - 1.8L
4.27 - 1.4T Eco
4.27 - 1.4T
4.58 - Auto
Second:
2.16 - 1.8L
2.16 - 1.4T Eco
2.53 - 1.4T
2.96 - Auto
Third:
1.47 - 1.8L
1.30 - 1.4T Eco
1.47 - 1.4T
1.91 - Auto
Fourth:
1.07 - 1.8L
0.96 - 1.4T Eco
1.07 - 1.4T
1.44 - Auto
Fifth:
0.87 - 1.8L
0.74 - 1.4T Eco
0.87 - 1.4T
1.00 - Auto
Sixth:
0.74 - 1.8L
0.61 - 1.4T Eco
0.74 - 1.4T
0.74 - Auto
Reverse:
3.54 - 1.8L
3.82 - 1.4T Eco
3.82 - 1.4T
2.94 - Auto
Final drive:
3.94 - 1.8L
3.83 - 1.4T Eco
3.83 - 1.4T
3.53 - Auto

I guess it would be more fun if you could beat the Eco fuel-efficiency with cheaper DIY mods.

ME_Andy 08-19-2014 08:23 AM

I honestly think the 1.8L has a chance of matching the 1.4T, if they had the same final drive ratios. Cue conspiracy theories. Did GM increase the 1.8L drive ratio to bump down the mpg and sell more 1.4T's?

The stock difference is only 1mpg city, 2 highway.

The 1.8L has a much less available torque at lower RPMs... I would bet it had more to do with drivability than conspiracy to sell more 1.4T models. ;)

Don't take that to mean that I think the 1.8L car would be undrivable with the Eco manual trans

ME_Andy I have looked into this as I was very interested in getting the active air dam shutter system myself. I recently was at the dealer having my oil changed and I spoke with the technician responsible for their specialty work (turbo/EV) and he said as was stated above that each car is programmed to its specific components, and he also thought it was cool I was trying to frankenstein my cruze. So if you wanted the air dam shutter system you would have to install the eco ECM. On top of that if you were to install the eco ECM you would also need the transmission obviously because of its different gear ratios.

However the lowering springs, eco rims, lower air dam (non shutter system) are all direct swaps between the models. I'm not sure if the manual trans is compatible across to the 1.8L though.

2000mc 08-19-2014 01:12 PM

I bet you could get the eco's grill block cheap. I haven't had one off, but if it's like a Malibu, it's a separate chunk of plastic clipped onto the back of the bumper cover.

Or, as mentioned, devise your own control method. Nice little Arduino project?

Yes, this.

ME_Andy 08-20-2014 10:32 PM

@BrandonMods -thanks. That's good info.

I'm not really interested in the active shutters. A passive grill does fine by me.

trooper Tdiesel 10-05-2014 02:47 PM

would be tricky since the diesel is not sold with a manual, but add the long leged 6 speed to the diesel.

will take some digging just to find out if the bell housings are the same gas to diesel..

Actually I just looked up the stat and the diesel gearing is already a lot taller than the other models (3.2 final drive vs 3.94 for the 1.8L gas). Must be nice...

Haven't decided if I'll keep the Cruze yet b/c I have an Elio reservation. If I do keep it, the plan is:
1. 24W LED headlights ($80, save ~0.1hp)
2. get ECO wheels (~$1000, save 21#)
3. lithium ion battery (save ~30#, haven't figured out the details yet)

I do like this car alot and my fuel cost is only 7c/mile, but those steel wheels are driving me crazy.
