This should be fun.

Hey everyone.

I drive a real guzzler, an Infiniti I35, and I love this car, and I think it'd be fun to get as much out of it as I can...

Welcome to the site. What kind of mileage are you currently getting out of it?

According to the onboard computer, I can get about 28-30mpg if I only drive it to/from work. My commute is 90% freeway, so this can be easy. Overall, I can get about 26-27 now (again, according to the built in computer)

For me, it's more of a challenge to get this guzzler running decently. I'm already exceeding the "new" mpg estimages and would love to see how far I can go.

Part of the problem is I'm also extremely upside down on this beast, and couldn't get rid of it even if I wanted to...

I'm sure there's much improvement that can be had with the car. What's your baseline look like?

nitrogen 08-28-2008 04:54 PM

If I drive like a "normal" driver, not using any hypermiling techniques, its about 24-25mpg. I can get up to almost 30 just by some basic hypermiling. Best I've ever done was about 37mpg, but that involved a long, emergency trip to my mother-in-laws, when I was short on cash, and ended up drafting behind a truck most of the way.

Right now i'm testing to see how accurate the onboard computer really is, so we'll see if I'm actually doing as well as I think i am...

Pump those tires up hard! The difference in rolling resistance (RR) is tremendous ... and this is free!
Recall the last time you had an air leak in a tire. The car pulled to the low tire side, yes? This was a greater rolling resistance showing up. If you go the "other way" ... increased pressure ... the tire rolls easier. A pressure in excess of 40 psig would be a start.
Less resistance...less gasoline required ( more MPG). Hey, this ain't rocket science....N2 is not required.

Welcome to EM! It sounds like you're already honing your driving techniques. It didn't occur to me until Whitevette pointed it out. You should do the Nitrogen filled tire test!!!!!!

I am seriously considering a scanguage II to help me with my driving techniques. I seem to do VERY well on the freeway, but in city driving, I suck.
I had to do lots of city driving today, and I went from 28mpg to 25 today.

It might just actually be the car, but I am wondering just how well something like this can help?

nitrogen 08-29-2008 09:17 PM

Okay. The built-in MPG computer in my car is a piece of crap, and a huge liar.

The computer said I got 26.1. The math I just did on my last fillup said I did 22mpg.

:confused::eek:

It's always good to cover the basics first!
Tire Pressure, Air Filter, Oil/Filter Change, Remove un-needed weight (subwoofers, luggage, etc.)

You'll enjoy your new ScanGauge, once it's calibrated it is AWESOME!!!

Good Luck!
