It reminds me of the time a Durango caught fire and burned to the frame out in the woods. I gave everyone a ride home in my Subaru Legacy, and managed to fit 11.

Right around a corner stood a deer. I told everyone to hold on as I applied maximum braking while maintaining control (no ABS). There was what seemed to be a runway of distance, but with that load I stopped with just 20ft short of the deer. That was a memorable trip.

I wonder if an aftermarket hybrid conversion would qualify to those parking spots. Or those mild-hybrid systems used in the previous generation of the Chevy Malibu...

Really, just to open yet another can of worms, considering the environmental costs of building new cars (especially hybrid vehicles), they should instead have spots reserved for cars older than 10 years.

Of course we're all missing the fact that stores never, ever go through the bother of enforcing these parking space rules. Anyone with a lifted dually pickup getting 5mpg can park in the space without worry about anything other than a bit of internet hate and at the very most a key mark.

That's what I was thinking. How could they figure out that I wasn't geek enought to put the guts of a wrecked hybrid into some old American iron?

+1 for Frank. Which would you rather see in front of your store? A prius or a Ferrari???

It is a hybrid, after all...

Honestly, after a few Ikea trips, I don't think I'd be able to fit my haul in anything less than a wagon/SUV/pickemup. Certainly not the Echo/Rio/Mustang trio we have now.

Last time we went we took a Volvo wagon which, of course, crapped out while we were in town (Ikea is a solid 2,5hr trip from the sorry excuse for a city we live in). We rented a Crown Vic which took about 45 min worth of creative packaging to fit our haul and luggage, plus a 2 year old in the back seat. With her back there, it would have been no dice for dropping the folding seat, as even if it had been split, nothing would have fit with only dropping one side. That Crown Vic was an awfully nice car though. Quiet, torquey, rear drive...much tighter suspension than most would lead you to believe. It felt very natural to drive and to me had that luxury feel which can't be made up simply with more features. I was only 27 at the time, hardly the target demographic, so...I would say it was a very underrated car. Plus 28mpg driving around metro Dallas using light HM techniques!

We did at least snag some In 'n' Out and some Pupusas while we were there. Hey, we are both California natives and she is a Salvadorena, so meal from In 'n' Out and good Pupusas are hard to snag here. Always order your double double with grilled onions. Totally worth it. Might as well make the trip worth it? Oh, and we learned that the downtown Dallas Aloft hotel is exceptional...

Bought some stuff at Ikea with my Insight a few months ago, some 5½' long boxes that just fit with the rear seats folded.
So happy it is just that bit longer than the average hatchback

But I had to cross the whole parking lot to load it.
No "Red Hybrid Only" parking signs anywhere.

Just for the fun of it:
