Matching Tire Size - Mismatched Brand - Air Pressure

sorry for the edit, info changed around

ok, so i got 4 new tires (90%+ tread) on steelies

3 are sumitomo (51 psi)
1 is "i forgot" (44 psi)

all 4 are 175/70R13

what do i do about tire pressure?

44 to be safe
50 to chance
or throw caution to the wind and go for 60

I wouldn't inflate passed the maximum a tire is designed for. You would get better mileage gains for moon discs, etc.

You'll have to find the load rating for each tire at a given pressure, and inflate them all to a pressure where the load ratings correspond for best handling characteristics. Some tires do not have max load at max pressure, and some do.

They don't need to be even pressures, either. If your Sumi's have max load at 51 PSI, then your other one has max load at 41 PSI, do that.

thanks for the replies

one of the mpg rules are to max or (overinflate) your tires

so i was curious what everyone would say

So which ones better?

Christ 07-19-2009 08:50 PM

I personally run overinflated, but I don't usually recommend it to others. Sure, there might be safety concerns, and that's why I don't offer it as advice normally.

For me, overinflated helps with laziness as well as mileage. I hate checking my tire pressure. YMMV.

I usually go over too

but i wonder if im making too much of a deal out of this

im just not used to running different tire brands

Just do what I said earlier until you can get a replacement tire that matches the Sumi's, so you can use the "I forgot" (never heard of that one... ) for a full size spare.
