Accele LCDRV700CCDS Side-view camera for large vehicles at Crutchfield.com
What do you guys think about using this as a possible option to replace/supplement external mirrors? I'm not worried about laws at this point so let's leave that out of the conversation. |
No doubt it's nice, but $180 for just a camera? Suggested monitor only $530

Might be for quality stuff... Probably why I haven't gone for them yet

The camera in that looks a lot like these:

I have one integrated into the license plate holder on Turtle, and love it! It's hooked up through my DVD player, and it replaced my rear view mirror. I can see the back of a car in my rear view camera and the front out my side window.

They are okay - I'd say fair to middlin' - not great. I just had one of my cameras fail; most likely due to very low temperature. That is the second failure I have had that is (probably) from a camera failure. The third failure I had was due to my faulty wiring installation. So, that is about a 50% failure rate after 2-3 years of use.
My point is, the expensive unit you linked to looks like a plastic case around the same $25 camera. They are charging a lot more for the same camera. I have looked a long time to find something different (that may or may not be better), and this is it: 2 LED Waterproof Car Rear View Reverse Camera for Monitor DVR E400 Camcorder NEW - Newegg.com http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggIma...1130323829.jpg I want 130 degree view or less. Too wide an angle only shrinks the image, and it gets lots of barrel distortion. I do not want "parking lines". These only distract from the image. I want infrared operation, which helps a bit at night. I need the camera to be able to deal with direct sunlight and headlights. I need cold weather operation. At least -20C but preferably -30C. |
