Some IR photos!

I thought it would be cool to share this.

Recently, I got a $10 digital camera and removed the infrared filter. Then I used a piece of over exposed film to block some visible light.

<-- My current avatar is a picture of my Yaris that I took in IR.

Here are some photos from a bike path near my house.

That's clever, cool, inexpensive, and interesting

Hi,

I'll have to see what the video cameras I got for side view mirrors look like at night, with their IR LED's...

UfoTofU 05-22-2009 09:44 PM

That's neat too

I made a lamp with 6 IR LEDs from radio shack. When I'm in complete darkness I can take a picture of stuff within about 10 feet--almost like normal flash photography.

What I want is an IR deer spotter. A heads-up display would be nice, but even a beeper for "bright spot check" would be useful.

I've wanted to do that for some time now. Maybe I shouldn't keep looking for other cameras and just chop up my old Vivitar 3MP...

Wouldn't work with this setup. The camera's sensors respond to the part of the IR spectrum that's just below red, while the thermal IR from the deer (or the heat-loss photos of your house) are a good bit lower.

What I'd like to do is take the visible light camera output at night, and run it through an image processing program to intensify it. With the right setup, you should be able to get a HUD almost as good as daylight.

Here are the instructions I used: http://geektechnique.org/index.php?id=254

The camera in the link is more advanced than mine. It might be more similar to your camera.

Those pics are excellent! I used to use B+W infrared film and really liked how it looked. It didn't show up any differences between hot and cold surfaces so i'm wondering if the digital equivalent will?
