Three dimensional speed/pressure tracking

I've never seen anything like this before.

More details here.

I'd imagine it's a lot of money, but it would be fun to play with on an empty road, using perhaps a tracking car in an adjoining lane.

Clever, but, I would imagine the camera has to be stationary relative to the measurement plane. And then you need a stationary car which means a wind tunnel, I suppose it could still be useful leaning out a window or sunroof. At that point it makes sense to just do CFD.

edit: but with some development of the tracking camera that could work out sizes, then maybe a stationary camera wouldn't be necessary.

Julian, this may be of interest

Interesting, but I am not sure what use it would be? He does a lot of stuff that is race based but I often struggle to see the relevance for road cars.

You did write a book on modifying cars for track, I haven't read it so I don't know if it would fit in.

The system uses optical tracking, similar to Microsoft Kinect. The three white balls on the wand are prolly tracking dots.

[ibid]

They are capturing information in three dimensions and mapping it in two. Averaging multiple passes from the looks of it.

The testing techniques that can be used on road cars can also be used on track cars, but vice versa isn't necessarily useful.

Re a yaw indicator. I've been thinking about it and a weather vane with a linear voltage output would be simpler than the approach shown in the video.
