More importantly... is the header Catalytic Converter actually needed (some people run without it..some dont...just curious)

Try advancing the timing some.
The OEM can only set and recommend the vehicle be set to pass EPA standards.
The slightly retarded factory timing will decreate NOx and send more heat out the exhaust to get the catalytic converter going.
Advanced the timing may increase NOX production a little, but could increase horse power and increase fuel economy.

I think the distributor can only go like 4 or so° in either direction... so I'm advance it a little once everything's running

Good luck! The first one I got didn't work at all, the second worked for a while. I need to get it replaced again. Keep your receipt.

That's weird I've been running a innovative gauge for 5 years now. Same o2 and same gauge. Nothing's ever been changed.

Perfect. Then im getting another. Does anyone know anything about the exhaust effecting lean burn. Some say it does...others say it doesn't. I want to do a full aluminium catback... maybe coat it to keep temps in (this velocity...which is the important part....not backpressure) and maybe aluminum mufflers to replace stockers.. save weight all around and/or..... go smaller piping (idk what stock is ) but an 1/8 or 1/4 inch smaller might help because the exhaust from factory had to be designed for 6k rpm and 92 hp.. if I plan to only cruise and probably never hit 3k... hmmmm
